Headers
Have any of you had luck using summit headers.
Nobobdy really lists a header for 60-66 trucks. anyways my 61 has a SM420 (4speed) and it has the extra crossmember towards the front of the transmission. Will these headers fit: http://store.summitracing.com/partde...rt=SUM%2DG9006 only reason i am considering is because i can get them cheaper

You get what you pay for. I gotta swap out my Headman headers for Doug's. The #3 & 5 cylinders are angled too close to the plugs, and I keep melting plug wires.
Measure twice, buddy. I thought I was saving some cash, and ended up paying for it!

I bought those same ones. They have worked ok. But it made it a real real pain to change the back two plugs. Or the second to last plugs I ended up breaking off the plugs in able to get them out cuz I couldn't get a tool on them. And my plug wires have melted twice.
Mine have been on for two years and they have rusted quickly. The collector flange rusted out Really quick and leaks. When I bought them I knew they were the cheapest I could find and its what I was looking for. ( Cheap ) It did what I wanted and got me through temporarly. but when I buy another pair I'm going to upgrade to a better set. Just my experience with them. |

Are you running header shorty plugs. They made a huge difference in clearance for me, when running headers. Accel makes them and they seem to be a good plug

I put a set of the cheap Dynomax headers on my 66 GMC's 327 to replace the totally rotted-out ones that a PO put on it when he swapped the motor & tranny into it. They were the only thing I could pick up locally (read "quickly!") and went on fine in spite of the homebuilt bracketry for the alternator & PS pump that was used. I do have to use a 13/16" combination wrench to tighten the #6 plug; some of the others are tight but doable with the plug socket & rachet with a U-joint in line. The paint went away REAL quick; probably should have ordered a set with ceramic coating but wanted to get it on the road to drive to the exhaust shop. It had nothing but the headers on it when I got it and the collectors were almost completely gone on them! Now it's got a nice 2 1/2" system that exits behind the fenders & sounds sweet...

I didn't know they made short plugs just for headers. That would make a HUGH diffrence. The regular one ar a real pain to change! Its amazing how much info I get here.!

Started using Accel shortys... I like em. They are still too damn close to the pipes, but it's a cheap fix for now.
I just dropped $700 on an Ididit column and steering wheel. Looks purty, but Ouch! The headers have to wait...

upadate on headers.
I bought the damn summit headers these headers were never designed to be used in a 60-62 with 4speed and mechanical clutch linkage. I had to "clearance" my crossmember and collecter, cut arm off linkage and reweld it in a different possition, and they cleared the torsion bars by about a 1/4 in., maybe. some of the primaries barely clear the plugs and I think 2 maybe three plugs cannot be taken off with a plug socket, but a wrench can be used fortunatly. recommendation: Dont run SM420. dont uses these headers in your 60-62. my other tread: http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...threadid=75471
