You have to bend the straight end.
I hooked the spring into the fork, held it in position, then marked the straight end 2 inches rearward of a perfect hole in the frame. Took it off, bent it, then put the (formerly) straight end into the frame hole, secured it by bending in a way that it won't come out of the frame hole, then grabbed the spring end with pliers and hooked into the fork.
