TH400 Leak

This winter as i was trying to get my truck unstuck from the snow for several minutes i noticed quite a few drops of trans fluid in the snow after the truck finally became unstuck. I haven't noticed much if any trans fluid on my driveway before when it just sits, however, the fluid does need to be topped off every once in awhile. It just seems odd that it only seems to leak trans fluid while under load. Any one with some advice? Thanks

Re: TH400 Leak

I can't give you any sound advice for you issue but the TH400 trans began to leak on my 87 GMC V2500. I had the trans pan gasket replaced, some module replaced and it began to leak again a month later. It gradually got worse and I got tired of the leaks in the driveway. I had the trans pulled and all seals and gaskets replaced.

It cost me $1700 and although it was expensive it doesn't leak anymore and I don't regret it.

Re: TH400 Leak

You can buy every seal and gasket for a turbo 350 for about 25 bucks max. Other than the front pump seal, they can all be easily changed with the trans in place with the most basic of hand tools.

Re: TH400 Leak

I've known them, when hot, to blow some oil past the dipstick tube.

Re: TH400 Leak

I wonder if it got hot and some ran out of the vent.

These are both good thoughts, since the leaks would be (a) intermittant in nature and (b) temperature/load dependent.

Re: TH400 Leak

Except for shifting into drive a little hard it shifts fine so i'm going to keep her topped up for now and will give her a good once over when i get home. Is there a gasket between the transmission and the engine? I looked through my shop manual last night but was dead tired after a 12 hour work day and probably only saw every other word. Thanks
