What can I use for fuel tank padding between straps.
I have been thinking about using rubber strips and putting between the tanks and saddles/straps. I see LMC sells a kit but not sure what they are made of. At least I think that is what they are selling. Anti-squeak? I want something that is going to hold up well and for a long time.

From what I have read is it pretty much either tar paper or maybe a cut up inner tube?

I would look for a product called "quick roof" at your local home center in the roofing section. Google it.

15lb or 30lb asphalt impregnated roofing felt is pretty close to the factory squeak strips. If you have a buddy in construction they can prolly get you the tail off a roll.

Roofing tar paper.
That's what LMC sent me when I ordered the "anti-squeak" kit. I was a little pissed paying over $20 for what amounted to construction debris. Oh well...live and learn. |

I cut up a $7 Walmart rear floor mat to use as a rubber isolator when I do fuel tank r&r. Works as good as the original, but is thicker and lasts longer.

I just cut up pieces of an inner tube for both my fuel tanks. Worked like a charm and I don't hear any squeaking yet.

go to home depot or a local roofing outfit & get some EPDM rubber roofing. 2 problems with using bitumen based materials- will literally dissolve with gas contact, & no uv inhibitors, will break down. roofing EPDM is impervious to gas, heat & uv & you will never have to change them till your tanks rust-out

good point dieseldawg142, but unless the tank is in the bed of the truck and you enjoy slobbering gas on it, gas and UV resistance aren't really necessary. I've seen many roofing felt isolators outlast the tanks.
Basically, use what you have easily available. Don't over think it. I have used inner tube, roofing felt, rubber membrane roofing, ice and water shield.... Keep your eyes open for construction sites. With a little sweet talking, scraps can be available.

If you know any truckers,some 4" tie down straps would work too. Also round baler belting is pretty tough as well,the older 4 or 6" belts would work.I guess even some old seat belts doubled up too....

Well, I had a thick fabric trunk mat laying around from a Civic, so I cut that into strips and used it. Works.

I will have to see if we have an old tube from one of the tractors laying around. I also have some mastic tape to put around your window flanges on new construction. That might work too. I thing we used all the ice and water shield when we built our house. Of those three surely I can come up with something.
