Exhaust tips - what would look stockish?

I think I'm going to run my exhaust out under the rear bumper, rather than behind the tire was would have been original. I don't usually deviate from stock but this is a pretty easy change to reverse later if I don't like it.

The question is what tips to use! On my Pontiac (same scenario) I used Chevelle tips, as you can see below. Any suggestions on what might look good? And please, not those big Bow-tie ones...something that could pass for stock in 1970 if they had been doing that on trucks.

I had my exhaust guy cut my stainless pipes at a 35-40* angle behind the bumper and leave them that way. Turned out with a stock type appearance and look great. I'll try to snap a pic

No tips is what looks stock. Anything else will look like a mod. The pipes out behind the wheels are the bomb. It just looks right. I like 90 degrees,not an angle like the factory did. Sound better than out the back,too.

I agree with Tim. I like em straight out the side behind the tires but with the wide oval chrome tips. They do sound different too.

I'm looking for the same thing. I like the look on jhwkns truck or something similar. Maybe the same idea, just turned down right behind the rear tire? Right at the edge of the bedside maybe 4-5" beyond the edge of the wheel well lip kinda tucked under the edge and an inch or two showing (?) Something like that.

I like em out behind the rear tires at an angle not stock 90* Chevelle tips. just my .02 for what it's worth

I had to get down pretty low to get a picture of them. Unless you are several feet back, they aren't visible.





I also love the look of side exit pipes, but I find that driving on the free way/near k-rails can get pretty annoying. I'm much happier with the rear exit than I was with the rear tire exit.

Meh. I had said "could pass for stock in 1970 if they had been doing that on trucks" so I think it's pretty clear that (a) I knew they were not stock, and (b) was looking for something period correct.

If I had said "Can I find a tip that will fool people into thinking they were original" then flame away... but I didn't.

I really don't think he was trying to be smart with you, however, your post could be perceived that way in return.

Dave,not being contrary,but I completely understood what you were asking. I was not flaming,either. The fact is that in the era only a precious few special cars even got tips. I have been a GM truck guy since these trucks were new and when I want my truck to have a stock appearance I put them out behind the rear tires. Anything else looks like a guy who did his own thing,as we have since these trucks were new. You asked and that was my answer. I have a general look I prefer,then I also like to deviate to gain a specific vibe,too. Pipes dumping down from the quarter panel just behind the wheel well looks clean and factory from the era...like Novas and Camaros. I was going for that look on my '72 but they ended up different. They are back near the corner,but it dies have a factory-like look. The guy said it was because of my spare tire carrier,which is the drop down type,not your standard unit. I don't really like it this way,but it's ok...and it has a factory look. If I removed the Bartens bumper they'd be hanging out in space. There's not enough pipe after the bent to cut shorter so I left them alone. Done a bit differently they could look good. I'm sure you can envision them inboard a bit.

Borla chrome 2.5 tips hanging barley below the rear bumper. Tips have a sharp crackle more when accelerating, where tubes seem to have more of a rumble.
