2wd 14 bolt rear axle fit on 4wd?
Hi guys,
I'm trying to get my stuff together for my axle swap on my 1970 C20. I've got a line on a 14 bolt rear axle. It came from a 73' 3/4 ton, but the perches were adjusted and put onto a 72' 2WD 3/4 ton. My questions are: Is there any difference in a 2WD rear vs a 4WD? And if the perches have been adjusted to fit on a 72' 2WD, will I need to do anything besides bolt it in on my 70' 4WD? I have a leaf spring truck and that's what it came from. Anything else I'm missing? Thanks! |

Re: 2wd 14 bolt rear axle fit on 4wd?
For the most part they are the same. I did one to a truck years ago, only thing I remember were the shock mounts were a little shorter, therefor the shocks would hit the axle tube. Not a big deal really, I just put a small dent on the shock tube. Other than that, I can't think of a difference.

So,a 67-72 C/20 rear will bolt directly into a same year K/20?

Re: 2wd 14 bolt rear axle fit on 4wd?
They had either coils or leafs. A Dana 60 from a '72 C/20 will not bolt up to a '72 K/20 frame to the best of my knowledge.

Re: 2wd 14 bolt rear axle fit on 4wd?
I've never owned a 67-72, but when I had my '62 4wd burb I was looking for axles for it, I looked at those styles and thought that the rear was 40.5" spring perch, which is the same as 73-up 1 tons.

Re: 2wd 14 bolt rear axle fit on 4wd?
67-72 2x4 trucks have a 42.5" spring center. The 4x4 has a 40.5". The 73-87 2 and 4 wheel trucks have 42.5" spring centers in half and 3/4 ton variants. K30 trucks have 40.5" spring centers. Shock mounts are different between all.

Thanks Mike for the thorough info. I'm sure this helps the OP better than my "...to the best of my knowledge". I'm sure this helps us all. Gotta start writing this stuff down!

I'm glad I have found a place where what most people consider "useless" information is actually useful!
