Getting some axles from a salvage yard and I have a few questions
One or both of my axle tubes on my 1985 K10 are bent. I plan on replacing the vent window track my passenger's side door this weekend. While I was at the salvage yard getting the door, I asked what the door came off of. It was a 1985 K5 Blazer. I asked him what he wanted for both axles and he told me $400. I decided to get them. It was close to closing time so they'll take them off Monday.
Are there any obvious issues that I should look for when picking this axles up? I got the VIN from the Blazer but the RPO sticker was gone from the glove box. Is there anyway to tell the axle ratios of that Blazer's axles from the VIN? What was the most popular axle ratios on the K5 Blazers in that year? I currently have 3.08 gears in my K10 and I would LOVE to have a lower gear. Between the 305 the 33" tires and the 3.08 gear, this thing is WEAK. *Edit* How common or uncommon was it for 1985 K5 Blazers to have positive traction? Thanks Last edited by 99-LS1-SS; 05-10-2013 at 07:48 PM. |

I'm not up to speed on the actual stats, but it seems like open 3.08's were on most half ton stuff.

Re: Getting some axles from a salvage yard and I have a few questions
My 89' came with 3.42's and I've switched to 3.73......eventually going to 4.10's.
You could open up the differential and see what the stamping says on the ring gear. stamp "41 - 11" is a 3.73 gear stamp "41 - 10" is a 4.10 gear so, 41 teeth ring to 10 teeth pinion
