Truck bed tool box ideas?

Wondering if anyone here has repurposed something to use as lockable bed storage.

Right now I have a flatbed on the back of my truck (casually looking for a regular bed, but have a long list of better things on the truck to spend money on) and the PO gave me the plastic toolbox that he had mounted on it. Which I can't stand, it is the style that hangs on the bedrails, and the locks don't work. So looking for either a used metal tool box or something unique (60-70's period correct would be cool) to use, my only idea so far would be an metal Army footlocker. But it would need to be lockable and something long enough to carry my shotgun when I drive out to the range, and would like it short enough that once I get a bed it would be lower than the bedrails.

Any ideas or pics of what you got?

Re: Truck bed tool box ideas?

I've been thinking the same thing. I'd like to do an updated version of
the bedside toolbox http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...d.php?t=539198 , maybe

but I'd have a latch in the cab instead of handle and lock on the box. If I could, I'd have the door the whole width of the panel with the edge of the door 'hidden' along the trim seam, think of Cadzilla's fender skirts.

I like this but not how it sticks out

ultimate?

I've seen people use ice chests (Yeti), pepsi coolers, all sorts of stuff. I've seen one guy build his own from used fence lumber that had that aged look to it. Wish I could find a pic right now.

Here's a pepsi cooler toolbox

A milwaukee saw box

Or a DIY Box I kinda dig:

You could also use an old safe (not this one, it's blown open) but you might have everyone thinking they can try their hand at being a regular ol' safe cracker. They'd be trying to get in to it to show off to their girlfriends, you'd catch them trying, the dead bodies would pile up and create too big of a stink lol.

I've seen the old "beer keg gas can" idea done as a "Beer keg tool box" which was pretty neat.

Here's what we have in the back of the 64. Mostly empty, some cleaning supplies, a few basic tools, and room for a few bags of whatever...

I use an old ammo box for storage and an Igloo Playmate for my battery box...

I DID THIS:

http://kieth.smugmug.com/Trucks/66-G...6670&k=vfHng9N

MADE THE ENTIRE BED A TRUNK, THEN LATER ADDED A ALUMINUM TOOL BOX WHICH WAS LOW ENOUGH THAT THE TONNEAU WOULD COVER IT UP, DO NOT HAVE A PICTURE BUT IT IS ONE THAT IS ALUM TREAD PLATE AND MADE FOR A S-10 SO IT IS LOW AND ABOUT 5" PER SIDE SHORTER PER SIDE THAN THE BED. GOT IT FOR 75.00 ON CRAIGS LIST:

Re: Truck bed tool box ideas?

Creep, that's what I was thinking. I would find a galvanized box (fishing box, trucker box or feeder) just to keep with the rusty gold theme. The ammo box is spot on. How about welding two .50 cal bmg cans together to fit battery? Hmmmm, gun show next week.

Re: Truck bed tool box ideas?

Thanks.

Yeah I thought about doing an ammo can but I like peoples reaction to the Igloo.

Plus, if I get any ammo cans I'm putting ammo in them.

I've seen Knak (? spelling) boxes come up on craig's list at good prices. Weatherguard under body boxes.
