Removing wiper arms

How do I remove the windshield wiper arms from my 52 half-ton? The previous owner obviously had them removed when truck was painted. but, they were not indexed properly when reinstalled. So, when off they actually sit on the cowl. The shop manual talks about releasing the clip on them and then rotating them on the shaft until they are indexed properly. However, how in the heck do you release the clip? I have tried everything. Any help please?

A small 90 degree pick tool. Look through the windshield at the pivot and you can see the backside of the arm. The clip is a spring steel catch that rests in the groove that is perpendicular to the splines. Pull the edge of the clip with one hand and lift the base of the arm with another. Place a towel around the pivotto avoid scratches. Soak with penetrating oil to release corosion if they have been on there awhile and have a buddy help with prying the arm up if the one trick pony method doesn't work. Good luck

One set of wipers gave me a fit. Once removed I noticed there was paint on the splined shaft. I hope your case is different. I resorted to heat to remove mine; very lucky heat didn't do damage.

Okay, thanks. I was doing it right, just kept thinking that there has to be an easier way. I will keep at it.

I noticed a can of freeze off at oreillys the other day. Probably safer than heat.
