alternatot wiring question

I have put a single wire alternator into the truck and now I'm wondering how to wire the gauge wire in. I have the ground to the engine block and the positive lead to the starter. How do I get the signal to the gauge cluster.

I would put a three wire back in it, but that's just my opinion after reading some tech articles regarding the topic at http://www.madelectrical.com/

Are you trying to wire in a volt or amp gauge?

You're volt gauge can be run anywhere you want it to go, the alternator, fuse block, starter post.. Amp gauge you don't really need anymore.

If you are refefring to the generator warning light in the cluster, the installation instructions for the Painless wiring harness say that you CANNOT use the warning light with a one-wire alternator. I would image that applies to the stock harness as well.

If you referring to the battery gauge, I think that would work just the same. You can probably find a more complete answer by checking some of the other threads here. For example, I found this snippet:

"There are two ammeter wires (one black wire and one black/white stripe wire) running from the harness on the firewall to a junction by the drivers headlight. The wires are labeled, in the wiring diagram in the service manual, as Ammeter Generator and Ammeter Battery."

As long as the "Ammeter Generator" generator wire is conencted to the output of the alternator the ammeter should continue to work as before. But as I said, searching the forum will probably get you a more complete answer.
