First Steps LS Swap......

Brought this home yesterday. Bought it at an insurance auction 60,111 miles. Paid $3200 for it, but I got the whole truck. I searched for months for a better deal on just a trans/engine combo with no luck. I was looking for something with less than 100K. I found prices from $1500 all the way up to $3600 and no way to verify the mileage or hear them run, on most of the ones I did find. Hopefully by the time I am done I'll be able to re-coupe some of what I paid by selling parts off of it. Best part, it runs and drives!

This is what I decided so far:

Boyds rear mount tank
hooker motor mount plates

What I'm still working on:

Dash, classic instruments or dakota digital?
headers, or stock trail blazer SS manifolds? (I've been told they fit with no mods)

Compressor relocating mount will be easiest if you don't want to trim the frame. Or you can get creative with the lines, I hardly trimmed my frame at all.

BTW looks like you got a good deal on the truck. Whats it going in?

I have looked at the DD mounts as an option. I know someone who is currently using the Hooker mounts on an install and they are supposed to locate the rear flange of the engine in the same location as the original 350. I'm gonna get by there sometime this week to check it out before ordering mine. Greg

It's going in my 70' CST long bed, it was my daily driver until about three weeks ago when I sold the engine out of it.

I thought I'd post this information also. Copart, the insurance auction I bought the truck from is nation wide, and anyone can buy salvage vehicles from them with out a license. You register online, the auction is online, and its free unless you buy something. They have all the vehicle information online also, mileage, damage, runs and drives, etc. Be aware of the fees before you buy!!! There are buyers fees, taxes, and a couple misc. fees when you buy. I won the bid on this truck at $2400, after fees and taxes it was $3168.29 out the door. Factor that in when you bid. Check them out at copart.com.

I removed a 350/350 from this engine stand and placed the new LS engine on the same mounts BUT I had to extend the front mounts (higher) to clear the oil pan.
the front mounts and the rear mounts are in the same location as the 350/350 with that said this new engine should drop into the same mounts on the 78 truck as the old 350.
DD said that the adjustment is the drive shaft, set the engine to the correct location as the length of the existing drive shaft, the shift linkage should fall in the same location as the old 350

Swap I'm currently doing I used the Holley hi mount a/c bracket kit with a sanden sd7 compressor. Looks more like a factory bracket than Mose other kits that look like a bunch of fabricated pices that stand out .

I have good news for you my friend: I just put a 6.0L in my 72 swb and the factory a/c comp fits with no frame trim at all. Plenty of room for movement. Check out the pics on the thread I started called: for anyone using factory a/c bracket. Sorry I'm on phone so not easy to post a link at the moment.

I bought my a/c brackets from lsbrackets.com, really nice pieces, fit was perfect. I went with an r4 compressor but i am kicking my self for not going with a sanden. i will probably swap over soon though as my ac does not blow very cold. I charged it exactly as it should be with no leaks, just on hot days like 100 degrees, it blows cool but nothing close to cold.

What are you getting the sd7 compressor for. I bought one from the parts store and the pulley didn't have enough groves for the belt. What vehicle should I get one for?

LS swap mounts came in today. I ordered the gas tank from Boyd Welding on Wednesday. I looked at these mounts on another truck and I liked the way they fit, they have a few choices depending on where you want the engine to sit. Stock location all the way to 3" forward. Summit has them for about $80. Greg

rawraw67, probably not til the end of summer, unless someone is looking for something specific.

dkauffman05, I never mentioned using a SD7 compressor?? I only stated I really didn't want to cut the frame. Probably be a while before I get to that tho.
