Radiator overflow

Proper placement of the radiator overflow tank?

1963 C10 Fleet/short
350/350

previous owner has it up high on the passenger inner fender, doesn't seem to work as it should ... ?

Shouldn't really matter as long as your system is sealed and your radiator cap is functioning properly. Heat expansion should force fluid into the overflow tank, cooling vacuum should suck it back into the radiator.

With the limited radiator support area in our trucks, one has to put the tank somewhere.

Did not come originally with a radiator overflow. Originally the rubber hose from the barb on the pressure cap neck ran down the passenger side in the clips of the radiator and the coolant simply was deposited to the open air.
Perhaps your thinking of the windsheild washer bottle. It could have been mounted right next to the radiator on the drivers side or optionally mounted beside the master cylinder.

I assumed with the 350/350 conversion I would hope that the PO at least installed a 3-core, newer radiator...no? If not, it can still work with a radiator cap for a newer system. Get 16 psi with a pop-off lever. Make sure it's for a coolant recovery type system.

I placed mine inside the passenger fenderwell attached to the core support. Nice and hidden and plenty of access space. The overflow hose runs neetly down the core support and to the bottle.

I installed an aluminum overflow just behind the washer bottle. Instructions I’ve read indicated the top of the tank should be as near to the same height of the upper radiator tank as possible.



The one I used is a black powder coat model from Jegs:

I previously had the long stainless hot rod type and it was constantly empty leaving an air gap in the radiator. With this version, the radiator is always full to the cap when cold checked.

I used the washer fluid bottle, relocated the battery, and installed the washer bottle and bracket where the battery used to sit.

Here are the pics. When I swapped the deluxe heater for the standard, I mounted the washer bottle on the firewall. I found an OEM mount and bottle and installed them in the factory wiper bottle location for an overflow. Wanted something functional, but still looked "factory". By placing the washer closer to the motor/pump, it required less line and looks cleaner due to less lines under the hood. Did have to put a hose clamp on the overflow cap as its just a hair smaller than the 5/16" overflow line, but its working fine and don't have to mess with any more burped fluid when its topped off.

So theres no heater in your truck?

There is a heater. I had the deluxe heater which is in the engine bay in 63 and I converted to a standard heater which is in cab for 63 to make more clearance for the big block engine.

I apologize if i've already asked you this but where did you buy your overflow and does it provide for re circulation as well or strictly over flow?
