1986 with 327 problem
Ok guys, weve been messing with the carb and timing on my 86. Weve got it close to acceptable but we noticed that the fan was blowing the air out the front of the truck and not towards the block. Were thinking its the belt setup, do any of you guys have a diagram or something that shows the belt setup the right way on a 327?

Is it a marine motor, out of a boat?

Re: 1986 with 327 problem
if you have a serpintine belt system then you might have your water pump running backwards. does it run hot or warmer then usual? if so then your belt is runninng your water pump the wrong way. to reverse direction on your belt to make it run it at temp.

Re: 1986 with 327 problem
Not a marine motor and it runs extremely hot. I drove it 3 minutes down the road and it overheated.

Weird! I heard of electric fans having backwards wiring, but never clutch fans.

Re: 1986 with 327 problem
What type of belt drive are you using? V belts or serpentine? Direct drive fan or clutch fan? Fan blade mounted backwards on clutch? (seen it done...........) Take a couple pics and post them....

"Fan blade mounted backwards on clutch?"
What I was thinking, but wasn't sure it was possible.

Re: 1986 with 327 problem
Alright. I went over and checked out the truck. The serpentine belt is on right as we think. We took a closer look at the fan and it does seem to be backwards... Oops on the PO. Tomorrow im heading over to fix that problem then im gonna test it out! Got my title in my name today and im gonna go get it inspected soon!

Re: 1986 with 327 problem
Physically turning the fan around does not change the direction of the airflow. It is the rotation direction that matters.....look at the ceiling fan in your house.
If you have the serpentine belt system that turns the water pump in reverse and the older fan and water pump.....2 problems. Not only is the fan pushing instead of pulling, it is probably not doing it as well as it should, if it is the wrong one....but the water pump may be wrong too. Everything has to match it's rotation direction.....CW or CCW

Re: 1986 with 327 problem
If you flip the fan around, it's gonna prolly destroy itself. And wreck a whole lot of stuff when it does. And could kill you if you are near it.

Re: 1986 with 327 problem
Well guys after today and all the searching, Crosbys auto places don't seem to have any fans that are opposite to what mine is. Ive decided im going to change and go with dual 14 inch electric fans. Just tired of roaming around for nothing. The fan its self is what isn't right. The blades are angled the wrong way, I checked out my buddys 85 and more of the chevy trucks he has and all the fans are the direct opposite of what mine is. All run the same direction but the angles are different than what my blades are. So electric fans are coming in Aug 6 so ill just have to see from then.

Re: 1986 with 327 problem
Don't ignore the water pump...it has to turn the right direction too.

I was thinking this exact thing as i was reading the above posts. turning a fan around doesnt change anything in respect to direction of air flow. as LongHair motioned you could have a miss-matched pump vs. fan issue. with a little more research you might be able to figure out if the water pump is off a different year/model motor or if the fan is perhaps the wrong application? going electric is a great idea but can get expensive quickly. just a thought. -Izzy

Re: 1986 with 327 problem
Yea we checked it out. It seems to be from a yard or something.. How would I check to see if its turning the right way? Ive always said in my head on the belt, Smooth the smooth and "rough" to "rough". But I don't know if that is right. The belt is set right to how ive always said. But I might be thinking wrong?

Re: 1986 with 327 problem
Pics would certainly help. Serpentine set up should use a reverse flow pump, V belt uses a standard flow pump.
As for the fan, I work for an OEM and we had sent out a tech bulletin to the dlr's about mounting the fan backwards when replacing the clutch so yes, it can be done... I didn't believe it either... Had techs doing it by accident.... Get those pics. I'm sure between all of us you can get her running cool! "Longhair" is right, pump and fan have to match either clockwise or counter-clockwise.... |
