62' 8 lug spindle/brake swap?

I tried looking through the huge brake thread but I never really found a specific answer to my questions.

Is there a drop spindle available for my 62' 8 lug ūton GMC?

Could I keep the factory drum brakes or would I need to do a disc brake swap? I WANT TO STAY 8 LUG!

Any help would be great!

I have never seen any 8 lug drop spindles other than dually drop spindles, you would have to switch to disc brakes but 3/4 ton hubs should fit 1 ton spindles

I am new to the scene but I have a C20 and, from my research, it seems fairly certain that if you want to lose the inches you have to give up some lugs. On the upside, your wheel choices vastly increase.

Performance Online makes them in 8 lug for 63 up. Does anyone know if they are adaptable to a 62? Maybe I can find that info in the brake thread?

What I think, and cannot prove , is that the '60-'62 share a unique lower ball joint, so there is not an interchange to allow the use of later spindles. All disc brake and power steering trucks had larger ball joint shafts.

Like to convert a '63-72, you just change out the ball joints to a '73-'87 and use the appropriate spindle.

since this is a torsion bar front end I would have to change everything, including the cross member. I don't want to modify it that much.

It's all good! I appreciate any help I get. I think I will adjust the torsions down a little. That might do the job. The power drums stop it just fine. Maybe I'm over thinking things?

Re: 62' 8 lug spindle/brake swap?

Might consider a crossmember swap to something newer...the 60-62 guys do them all the time on the 1/2 tons

Posted via Mobile DeviceI turned the torsion down and went with the smaller Jeep springs in the back... 4-5" in the rear and I'm guessing 3" in the front.
