How did you go about making your own? Did you get a cowl from another hood then weld and cut your hood?

Re: Cowl hoods for a 72 gmc

OK...question here.
I'm going to have the Cowl Hood shipped to my Mechanics and he's going to help me install it.
While I'm at it, the Cowl piece (between the Hood & Front Window) is bent and I'd like to install a new one along with the "netting" underneath that prevents Pine Needles and other crap from getting in there.

I guess I'm asking is the time to do this; when the old Hoods off.....
before the new one goes on, and how hard is it to change that Cowl?
Whats involved?

Roger

very easy, pop the wipers off and unscrew a few screws and it comes off.

Re: Cowl hoods for a 72 gmc

Anyone ever use the Truck Shop out of Orange, CA? Their site is http://truckandcarshop.com/index.html.

The guy I just bought my truck from said he has used them a lot and likes them. They show a cowl for a 69-72 for $389 in their latest catalog. I haven't used them yet, but I haven't seen them mentioned anywhere on this site, good or bad. Anybody used them?

Re: Cowl hoods for a 72 gmc

I buy all my parts from the Truck shop in Orange and they have awesome prices, especially during their once a year 10% off everything sale. I have a cowl hood on my 67 Camaro and it helps give me room for my 396 but I don't like them on 67-72 trucks, makes the front end look too chunky and cluttered and just does seem to look right on a truck. Cowl induction is for a muscle car, not for a truck. To each his own, though.

Yeah, I am not a big fan on trucks either.

When is the 10% sale usually? Do they mail something out, or how do you find out?

Re: Cowl hoods for a 72 gmc

OK since I started this thread, I need to VENT!!!

I'm looking for (what I call) the "Cowl" that goes on at the Bottom of the Front Windshield and between the Hood/Windshield!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

All my life I've been calling it a "Cowl" but when I search the Part Vendors, I always get COWL HOODS, and can't find what I', looking for.
Am I calling it by the right name or does NO ONE carry it...(unlikely).

;+(

I don't think it is being reproduced. Have to find it used. I call it the cowl panel.

Re: Cowl hoods for a 72 gmc

Nope, I'm not. I have seen used ones with no antenna hole for the guys who don't want to run an external antenna. Might be nice for that smooth look. On my Camaro I welded shut the cowl vents and smoothed the whole thing. Looks sweet like that. I think I may have seen a smoothed fiberglass version of the 67-72 truck cowl panel on Ebay, not sure though.

Re: Cowl hoods for a 72 gmc

I had my body man shave my wiper cowl. And I have a LMC cowl hood. Fit pretty good with a little adjusting/grinding on my aftermarket chrome hinges.
Check out my build thread for pics.
If you cowl is a little bent, might be a good one to shave completly.

He opened the very top and already noted 3 Dents that are 2"-3" in Diameter.
I called LMC, but unfortunatly I'm on the Left Coast and they're only there untill 4PM (PDT), so I'll have to call back tomorrow.
My Mechanic noted it on the Bill Of Lading and I'm going down tomorrow to take pictures of the damage.

So from MY perspective, they need to:
1) Ship a replacement Hood IMMEDIATLY, and not
wait for this one to be returned.

2)Give me $$ in refund for fixing the Hood, (and NOT a "Credit" off my next purchase).

So my NEXT question will be, has anyone had a similar problem with a Hood or Body Panel from LMC (or any other Manufacterer) and what was YOUR problem and the outcome?

Roger

Re: Cowl hoods for a 72 gmc

Well we had the hood for $389.95 + $125.00freight but since you already have that we can help you with a new hood to windshield cowl panel. You'll find it on the following page of our web site
http://www.gmcpauls.com/Body&Bumpers.htm
part# 5601340 $195.00, 1967-72 Hood to windshield cowl panel. Located directly behind hood and in front of the windshield, has antenna hole pre-punched. Exactly like original in every detail makes for a effortless install. Ships UPS Oversized II, its one of our newest parts available.

Well I went down in person and checked out the hood.
Its NOT as bad as my Mechanic led me to believe.
I mean.....I'm going to have Bodywork done to the Truck anyway, and there's no gaurentee that a "Replacement Hood" is going to be in any better shape.
At this point I just want it on the Truck.
Told my Mechanic to "make it happen".

So LMC calls me and gave me the option of:
1) Sending out a New Cowl Hood without waiting for THIS one to ship back.
2) A COMPLETE refund after they receive the Dented Hood Back.
3) Take it to a Body Shop, and get an Estimate and they'll send me $$ for the repairs.

They don't do "Credits" anymore as it was to much of a Paper Trail to keep track of how much "Running Credit" a Customer has.

So I chose to take Option #3 from above.

Now the unexpected pleasure of the day, was my Wife stopping by to take a couple of pictures of my Truck with the new Cowl Hood installed.
Our Mechanic is 15 Miles down the Hill from our House, but my Wife has to gas-up her Patrol Car, and drive right by there!
She sent me the 2 attached pictures this afternoon while I was at Home.\
I TOTALLY SH**T MY PANTS!
On one of the pictures, I had to do a little Photoshopping to get rid of the "Reflection" on the Front End.
