I hate people. Where to get new door window?
I just recently moved into a new neighborhood, and I haven't been here two weeks and somebody smashed the windshields on both of my trucks, and the door window on my square.
The windshields I'm going to take to a shop, but I'm going to do the door window myself. The whole door needs some work anyways, and I'll replace the seals while I'm at it. But I've never done one of these before. If I buy new, does it come with the channel attached to the bottom, or am I trying to reuse my current? If I'm reusing my current channel, am I better off getting a junkyard window?

Sorry about your trucks man.. That really sucks.. I hate people like that...
LMC may be your best bet.

Re: I hate people. Where to get new door window?
I already looked at LMC, I'll probably get the rubber there, but it looks like they sell separate components for the glass, the window channel, and the felt to hold it in place.
I've never assembled one, but I've heard of people having them separate. I imagine this to be an even greater risk with new seals in place, as they'll tug and pull on the glass just that much more until they break in. If I can't find an assembly, I'm probably best getting a complete stock assembly from a junkyard.

If you have a gun start cleaning it outside that should stop most of it.

Re: I hate people. Where to get new door window?
Your best education on this subject is your local pick and pull junkyard. I would read up on removal/replacement of the window first - youtube usually has some good how to videos. Then take your tools to the junkyard and start the disassembly. The good part is that if you mess something up it is not your truck that is damaged, and it does not cost you anything. Here in AZ there are a some good windows left at the pick and pulls, but they are a little pricey for used parts - like $50 per. Even if you buy a new window, taking apart an old one at the junkyard is a great first step - just for the experience you get.

Check with a glass shop, sometimes we spend more trying to spend less.

Get the glass at a scrap yard and buy your seals from precision restoration parts!

Re: I hate people. Where to get new door window?
I'm not too terribly worried about the costs, I'm mostly worried about doing it RIGHT. I'm not looking to cut costs from $100 down to $85.
Mostly, I don't know what is involved in getting the bottom channel attached to the window. Like I said, I've heard of some people having the two separate when they've tried to assemble it themselves, I was hoping to get some insight from people with experience. With that fear in mind, I think my local Pick-N-Pull is going to be my source for a window. I've never heard of anybody having problems with a stock one coming apart on them. Any source for rubber better or worse than another? I was thinking LMC, but I'm open to suggestions if somebody has a great (or bad) experience. I'd hate to repeat the mistakes somebody else already learned from.

http://precisionrestorationparts.com/ check out precision restoration parts for your seals and Felts. Great product and competitive price. They also have great how to videos on their YouTube channel. They used my truck for the square video. So I can speak to the quality first hand

Re: I hate people. Where to get new door window?
Had thew same thing happen to me a few years back but the intention seemed to be theft.
At the time I was in a small town with little available, so I had a friend take me to one of the few junkyards 45 minutes away and I ended up paying way too much for the glass I needed. When I got home and wiped the dust off I found out it was scuffed and scratched. I was desperate to get the truck fixed though and I had very little money to begin with. If you go to junkyard, beware that the 80's trucks had thinner glass and a different size roller track. Again, this is another area where I messed up. I had to make the thin glass work with the original window track. In hindsight, I probably I would have ended up paying just a tiny bit more and ended way ahead if I had bought new glass from a shop and installed it myself. If you do go to a junkyard, bring some windex and paper towels to clean off the thick layer of dust. Make sure it's not too scratched, or if you can live with it use that to bargain the price down. Make sure the window and track are correct for your truck.

Re: I hate people. Where to get new door window?
Check out Soft Seal for your replacements. The restoration shop I deal with won't sell customers anything else. I have used them on my 83 K10 and my 69 Firebird. The quality is EXCELLENT. They are generally a little thicker than factory, but very soft, flexible, and seal great. I have seen them next to the "other" reproduction stuff out there and would never buy anything else. I am sure it costs a little more, but you get what you pay for.
Sorry to hear about your truck. When I lived in the city it wasn't uncommon to leave first thing in the morning and see 7 smashed windows in a row on the crowded street I lived on. I was so glad I had parking in the back! Some people can be total a&*$@les! |
