Help-Camshaft selection!
Ok, engine is a 400, 5.7 rod with aluminum 64cc heads, 10:1 with dish hypereutectics...Heads port matched, smoothed runners, bowl blend, all the way.
Retro-roller Looking for something daily driver, good idle and broad torque curve. Hoping to see 400hp, idea here is more head, less cam and good street driveability. |

Re: Help-Camshaft selection!
This going in a square? What rear axle ratio? What transmission? Which aluminum heads? Rear tire diameter? I like your vision on this build, give some more info and will tell you what I think.

Re: Help-Camshaft selection!
Heads are summit brand casting, non vortec, performer rpm intake.
In the end 3.42 or 3.5 gear. Tire size stock 96-98 Trans, 4l60 mild converter. You know, a SlEEPER!!! Must apologize for posting this in this section/figured i may see some 400 fans here, truck will be 96-98 SWB. Havent purchased any lifters yet, any road-worthy budget reccomendations appreciated. Also, i have yet to polish chambers etc, so compression can be tweaked... |

Re: Help-Camshaft selection!
The 400 makes awesome torque. The larger cubes eat up camshaft and what is pretty hot in a 350 is fairly mild in a 400.
For the info provided I would run around a 272 advertised intake duration on a 110 LSA. Here is a Howards cam that should work well: http://www.summitracing.com/parts/hr...make/chevrolet Fairly smooth idle with a little exhaust note in a 400. Should provide strong low end and mid range but play out around 5500-5600. Will work good with the 3.42 gears and cruise well at overdrive RPM. Brodix used to provide Summit with the IK line of heads, just under the Summit name, I assume they still do. They are good heads! I run this through a DCR calculator with the above mentioned cam and come up with an 8.16 which is what you want to shoot for running pump gas. A larger camshaft would be in order for a HOT street truck. When you say "good idle" "daily driver" "broad torque curve" I think this cam or one along these lines is what you want and should fit the bill. |

Re: Help-Camshaft selection!
Ill look into howards. Will that work well with injection?
Plan is this: Yank vortec out, use crank trigger& dist substitute flex fuel injectors(32lbs) for the stockers... Hopefully wind up with benefits of injection and maybe see 16-17 mpg? Letting computer control 4l60 and timing. Im in the part gathering stage, tearin ebay and salvage yards apart. Lots of 'fun' staring me in the face: Setting up perf rpm with injectors, locating roller timing cover with crank sensor mount provisions etc. milling adapter plate for vortec throttle body to intake lol. Luckily i can do most machining myself, aside from a line hone if needed, which i doubt. |

Re: Help-Camshaft selection!
I assumed you were running a carb and a 4L60, not the 4L60E and factory fuel injection.
