Re: Monster - 1974 GMC Suburban 2500 Super Custom

a friend from a friend offered to weld the exhause crossover for me...pretty cool

put a plug in

welded it for me

cool photo of him at work

took the shortblock and heads to the shop

heads were not flat (I was told they are by seller)
this is a photo of three passes by the machine shop and the heads still wasnt flat....well...the extra compression will be nice for my Propane setup

traced the debris in my heads back to coal in my valve cover. I feel so dumb for not cleaning them and putting them with coal inside them on my fresh engine....

while the shop was working on my heads, replaced my cam bearings and replaced a couple freeze plugs..I went ahead, pulled my dashboard and placed some green leds behind the gauges

short block is back...bought a new crank and bearings

crank is in

putting pistons back in

finished and closed the bottom part

that is where I am at right now. hope to finish the top this weekend.

Re: Monster - 1974 GMC Suburban 2500 Super Custom

your pix bring back some great memories

i had a 85 2500 suburban with 6'' suspension lift and 35's
and it drove like a school bus. that unibody construction gave it zero flex at all, but it was a real blast to drive and an eye catcher everywhere i went.

Re: Monster - 1974 GMC Suburban 2500 Super Custom

well..a lot happened in since the last update I made here. Ill spread it over a couple of updates.

for some reason I had the urge to check one or two bearings, before finally putting the engine back in.

and what I found sucked mucho!
all bearings had some kind of damage. and I had only untill now spun the crank by hand

...WHAT THE **** IS GOING ON!

check out the material in the oil feed holes

this one is the worst. looks like the crank I got wasnt finished correctly and the oil feed holes damages the bearings

I was about to give up

Re: Monster - 1974 GMC Suburban 2500 Super Custom

I friend helped out. he checked the crank again. finished the oil feed holes, so they werent sharp anymore and polished it were needed.
also bought some plastigauge, to check the crank and rods in the engine. ordered new bearings (again).

waiting for parts I took apart my alternator and gave it the same color as the engine VHT Kermit Green 8)

plastigauge is in. the assembly and checking can begin:

main bearing at 0.002.....thats OK. should be between 0.002 and 0.003

checked a coupl of other bearings and some were 0.002 and 0.0015. I checked with some friends and online and although 0.0015 is tight, I should be OK. Even in WOT runs my engine does only about 4k rpm.

timing chain and first head back on. Allmost put the timing chain on again with the wrong timing. I was glad I cought that before closing her up.

just a nice pic of the deck. I can look at pics like this for hours. Love it

intake en valvecover er weer op, nadat ik de kleppen weer gesteld had. heb besloten om meer groen te spuiten, zodat naderhand het groen beter zichtbaar blijft in de motor ruimte

borrowed an engine hoist and started putting her back in myself.

TOUCHDOWN! Monster has a heart again. now to put everything back on again.

took off the vacuum advance and locked it, since I run a programmable ignition that also handles vacuum advance.

bought some new hose clamps, but these were just a little to big and thus didnt close up correctly. so ended up using the old ones again.

Re: Monster - 1974 GMC Suburban 2500 Super Custom

finished the engine, dont like the red distributor cap:

I had bought a nice stainless hose and straight water neck, but the hose hits the air cleaner when its one. So need to get a swivel at 45 degree I think.

for now I put the old hose and neck back..

ready for take of:

finally engine startup and a buddy filmed with the GoPro

back on the road again

back in front of our house

went by the shop and listened to the gnein using an stethoscoop. no strange noises...

drove for over 300 miles by now and everything still seems fine.
