Interior noise level?

I have an 87 blazer that I am fixing up. Just curious on the noise level inside. I used the stock head pipe and tail pipe but had to redo the section in between. I used a "turbo" muffler and it sounds nice on the outside but its really loud on the inside and has a drone at certain speeds. Just wondering if I went back to the stock muffler, how much quieter would it be inside? Would it help to point the exhaust out the back instead out the side behind the rear tire? I think its actually quieter with the top off

It'd be as quiet as any other V8 truck or Burb. It sounds like you just got a cheap muffler, or one prone to resonate anyway.

I also have an 87 6.5 turbo diesel suburban but it has a full cloth interior as opposed to the bare fiberglass back half the the blazer has, and I wondered how much of a difference that would make. Even being a diesel its alot quieter than the blazer.

If you have a bare interior that is part of your problem. My 85 is loud inside, I've got to get a full carpet kit in it.

It has the full factory interior in it but the fiberglass top is bare inside.

I have a conundrum with mine. I REALLY want to have a multi use vehicle that I can use as a pick up so I need to put a liner of some sort in the back of it for when the rear seats are out. However at the same time I need it to be useful for the wife and kids so they can enjoy top off days. I have searched lots of sites but haven't really found a GOOD solution to this. I will get underneath the truck and use sound suppression spray on the underside areas but still humming and haaing about what to do inside.

You need a better muffler, the dynomax super turbo flows well, doesn't cost much and does not drone. I'm sure there are others out there that will perform as well.

If you ever want to drive with the rear window down, DON'T re-route the exhaust pipes to run straight out under the bumper. If you do run it that way you'll be choking on exhaust fumes with the window down. Besides, that won't change the tone of the muffler. A different muffler would change the tone, or adding a "H"pipe in front of the mufflers, would balance out the sound on a true dual setup.

have just discovered this actually.
both my exhausts run out under the rear bumpers and as i have no window in the thing right now i have been choking a bit. where SHOULD the exhausts come out?

I dont have dual exhausts on mine, the two pipes come together under the engine then its about a 2 3/4 single pipe the rest of the way back with 1 turbo muffler in the stock muffler location. I am going to try a different muffler and see what that does for it. Does anybody have both a blazer and a suburban, both with stock exhaust systems? What is the difference in sound levels between the two? The only difference between the two would be there is no cloth headliner on the shell of the blazer.

I had one new and stock back in the 80's. I don't remember them being inherently louder vehicles from the fiberglass top.

I've owned Blazers,Jimmys,and Suburbans in all sorts of configurations and the interior sound level has always been fine. My '85 Jimmy diesel has a soft top and I think it's pretty quiet. The mufflers are stock spec.
