82 Crewcab Dually 4x4 / Cummins Coversion ??

Picked up a 82 crewcab dually 2wd other day for a nice price. Its a 454 / 4 speed currently. I bought it in the middle of an intake swap from a stupid tweaker. Anyway my plan was to get the 454 running. Got the intake on, dizzy stabbed and finally got it to crank but it ran crappy. Probably a mix of timing a little off, bad gas, etc. Anyway my original plans was to do a Cummins swap anyway so not spending time or money on the 454. Id like to do a 4x4 swap too eventually. So got some questions....mainly about engine crossmember and transmissions. The Cummins swap will be first but dont wana cause me problems down the road when I swap to 4x4. Can I use the 2wd engine cross member during both stages. I have a MIG and plasma cutter and can fab. OR is it not doable and need to swap to TN Diesel crossmember right away.

Nxt is the tranny. I want a 5 speed I think.....nv4500. These are pricey so wondering again if they will be able to go from 2wd to 4wd later with say an output change. Would like to go pass drop then for ease of finding chevy D60's. So could run a round pattern NP205 and swap the input to match the nv4500 if possible.

Lastly what about accessories. Im hydroboost so do I use the Chevy or Dodge ps pump? Alternator, ac compressor, radiator?

Thanks guys.

Also head over to 4BTSWAPS.COM

There is tons of info there with lots of cummins/ Chevy conversions. I am posting the link of the 6BT/5.9 Cummins conversion group.

http://www.4btswaps.com/forum/forumd...9-Conversions&

I was interested in doing a Cummins swap until I read how easily the newer 8.1L Vortec was to swap in place of the 454. The 8.1 bolts rights in and bellhousing bolt pattern is the same as the 454. Just get the ECM for the 8.1 and have a harness shop build your harness for the stand alone engine. There are some other things to change but ALOT easier than a Cummins swap and leaves lots of space under hood.

I plan on doing the 8.1 swap eventually in my CC dually 4x4 hopefully within the next couple of years.

I'm eventually doing an 8.1 swap into my crew as well. I ran a company that had lots of diesels in the fleet and we kept 5 mechanics working 6 days a week plus a night mechanic as well. Diesel does not = bulletproof, but it can = big $ for repairs. Just my 2 cents.
