Refinish dash without removing windshield?

Hey guys, the dash in my '62 is pretty rough looking and I'd like to strip it down and repaint it and repair a couple spots. Any of you guys done this without removing the windshield??

I would, but seeing as how I don't have a garage yet. Doesn't seem logical to pull it and let it sit outside, seeing as how it can rain a lot around here.

Also, feel free to post your pics/paint schemes on your dashes!

Re: Refinish dash without removing windshield?

It can be done with the windshield in place, but the most difficult issue may turn out to be the masking. If you wash the gasket down well with alcohol first, that might help the tape stick to the gasket. Being that 60-63 windshields are among the most difficult to R&R, I'd be inclined to try repainting the dash with it installed.

Although I must admit I painted my dash when the glass was out. It certainly made the task easier.

The paint on the dash is pretty thin to begin with, so hand sand it to avoid power tool scratch on the glass, got nothing to lose if the paint needs replacing. Post some pics of the dash, before and after, pop the wheel off for a little more room. Enjoy

Re: Refinish dash without removing windshield?

Thanks guys, I don't think I'll be so lucky on the thin paint. Someone took a paintbrush to it at some point. So I'll start with sanding paper and see how that treats me.

Paint stripper might be a path to take. I've got a couple friends that have experience with that. That's last resort, though.

Would any of you fellas be willing to measure the dimensions of the radio holes for me? I'd sure appreciate it! Seems a little silly to spend $50+ just for the radio holes when it'd be easy to make that patch.

Wow, I feel your pain! I must say your response that someone/PO took a paintbrush to your dash made me almost spit my coffee out onto the keyboard!!! The reason I laughed so hard is it brings back memories of stuff I have found that were wrong. Good luck.

Lucky for me (kinda) my windshield is junk. I'm going to do just the top of the dash when I have it out.

It is called anthracite grey, it is actually a paint I got fron REVELLE, I sprayed it with a gun I got from Harbor Freight. I think it adds a very unique look.

cool hope to see them when you're done the only hard thing for me was taping the corners between the windshield and dash but I just used a plastic putty knife and pushed in the tape under the rubber seal.

And terbronco7- yeah I really like how it accents the rest of the dash. good work!
