What the heck was that!!!

It all started when I. Decided to go for my old 63 c20. I took a 20 mile trip to town. I picked up my newly purchased AR-15 and headed home. As I was pulling into the drive I decided to try something I.had bot done before and wanted to do. I would do a perlite in reverse! I revved the engine up, fixed that clutch let it out to take off and POP! Truck died. I started it back up and was just going to park it. I taped the gas and nothing happened. It didn't move! Oh. It was in neutral? Ok. Shifted to reverse to back it in to the barn and taped the gas while letting out the clutch. Vroooom! That's all that occurrd. At that time my sister ran out and said "something just Dell out from under you're truck!". Worried I jumped out to see a large puddle of oil and reverse laying in the dirt! Now my original 3 on the tree is no more! I am VERRY upset! It still runs and drives in 1st 2nd and3rd. Can I fix it?

Re: What the heck was that!!!

Find another three speed, most people have to give them away, so you should be able to find one pretty cheap.
Next time you go to peel out remember you have a 50 year old truck, you will find the weakest link.

Re: What the heck was that!!!

Not a great idea, as you learned. Reverse isn't intended to see a lot of abuse (or any, really) and isn't real strong. If there's stuff on the ground I'd say that trans is probably only good for whatever spare parts aren't broken. You'll obviously need a new case, and as cheap and (relatively) plentiful as these are, I'd say your best bet is to just find another good one for $50-100 and plug it in there. I don't think trying to repair the broken case would be a good idea.

If it's revving without much pedal input you might want to check the motor mounts.

Re: What the heck was that!!!

The last three 3-speed trannsmissions I had went to the scrapyard. I couldn't give the things away. Look for about an hour in any town in this country and you will find one somewhere.

Re: What the heck was that!!!

Reverse is very weak in the early Muncie three speeds. You cant drive it because you dong have any trans oil. Now if Ya could find the broken pieces and stick then back with JB Weld you could refill it with 90 weight. You michr check at your local scrapper recycler. they may have a trans. Actually I like the early three speeds they have a lower first gear than the later Saginaw trans.

Re: What the heck was that!!!

Ok now I see that your truck is a C20. I would look for a granny four speed it will make hauling & towing much better.
