4l60 tq converter recommendations?

I have a bone stock LS1 out of a '98 Fbody running in my '72 SWB. I love the motor, but the stock converter leaves a bit to be desired. The truck isnt used for any serious performance, but a bit higher stall would up the fun factor. Any (preferrably budget sound) recommendations? I've heard people mention the TBSS verter a few times.

Stock 5.7L LS1/4l60e, 3.73 gears, 29" tire. No towing.

It will bolt on, but keep in mind the power curve on the TBSS's 6.0 is gonna be a little different than what you'd work with. Also, the tbss's awd puts a much higher strain/load against the convertor, so be a little careful when sourcing the parts.

While many of the baller units go for over $800 (circle D, yank, the billet ones etc) you can still get something like a TCI for around $500. Just remember that on a stock ls1 4l60e, the convertor won't be doing you any favors on lifespan. They increase the "hit" so a tranny that has any questionable parts might not be the best home for one. If the trans is junkyard-fresh, you may be better off putting the money aside for a swap/rebuild down the road, or put it into another fun-factor item like a cam.

Also, on the stock engine, there really isn't a direct performance gain, just a change in the way that performance is used. It will accell faster and feel quicker, but in some cases you lose the benefit at cruising speeds or with the additional heat load generated (trans cooler comes into play at that point).

I'm not looking to put significant load on the trans or effect street manners too much, just give it a bit more pep down low at WOT. My 4l60e came from the same car as the motor, approx 60k miles. I am using the largest trans cooler I could find.

Again, its not particularly for racing, but I would be happy if it shaved a few tenths off my 1/4 time. It just feels like it takes far too long to get into the power band, especially from a roll at 35 or so.

I'm looking for something akin to the "corvette converter" swap that is popular with TH350/400s. A few hundred RPM higher stall than stock and cheap... The yank's and others are a bit spendy with the other needs the truck still has. Of course, I could always wait a bit and pony up.

1995 to 98 s10 torque coverters should bolt up and are a factory 2200 stall. the highest of all factory gm torque converters for the 700 4l60 and 4l60e.
look up rock auto and try 98 s10 4.3 and pick the high stall. under $100 plus a small core charge. I bet the original one is less then 1400 so you will like the difference.

Do not do the S10 approach...4L60's from the V6 have a smaller input shaft and will not work with a V8 4L60. I only know because I purchased a V6 tranny and had to pay 2K to have it rebuilt with V8 internals and they had to change out the input shaft also.

That would be the 60º V6 not the 90º V6 which uses the larger shaft.

I'm with Chevydog, forget the converter and change your ring and pinion.

Phoenix transmission nice a nice converter that a lot of the tbss guys use. It's only $375 also. On a stock trans I'd suggest a good trans cooler and corvette servos though

The converter that you want is actually out of a regular trailblazer that had the 4.2 i6, not the TBSS. It should give you around about a 2800ish stall with a v8.
