Setting up a GM 10 Bolt Rear end... new gears!
Well guys, one of my winter projects was to change out my rear axle gears. I put an axle from a '69 Chevelle in my truck so that I was able to use camaro rear discs! The axle is a 10 bolt, 8.5". Originally, the axle was setup for the drag strip and accordingly had 4.88 gears!!!!! yep, 4.88!!!! Well, my first summer of driving my fresh restoration was interesting.... I managed to pull some great hole shots at red lights, but cruising at 3500 - 4000 wasn't too much fun.... so, i've got a set of 3.73's from Richmond and so far, i've totally disassembed the rear axle... no big deal... I'm now staring at a posi carrier on the bench, with a new gear on it, and a pinion gear. Now what!?!?
Does anyone have a good how to article on how to setup this axle. I ran into a couple of articles, but nothing really detailed on how to set the pinion depth and backlash, etc... any thoughts! |

Finish the job---you got that far the rest is the fun part.
Install the carrier and chck for depth an d alignment on the gear teeth. Use a good lithium grease to show the pattern of gear mesh. The adjustments will require either collars for the input shaft or or moving the carrier to the left or right with shims. |

This is the link you need:
http://www.ringpinion.com/downloads/yukoninstman.pdf (dial up warning...) Its from Randy's Ring and Pinion. I've bought from them a few times and I'm a very satisfied customer. I've done a few axle setups (the first one has about 20k on it, I guess I did ok). Follow the installation manual to the letter, don't skimp on the special tools you need. Off hand, you will need a dial indicator, dial caliper, torque wrench and a press and various pullers. I'd recommend making your old bearings into 'set up' bearings to save pulling your pinion bearing multiple times. I also made my old spider cross shaft into a driver for driving the pinion out of the case if you don't use setup bearings. Read this file a couple times and ask if you have questions!
