manual steering box for a '63
I want to replace the steering box and I am looking for a new or rebuilt. I found this one at classicparts http://www.classicparts.com/1960-66-.../#.UuvV2vldUhM and they said it was for a three speed and would not be an exact fit for my powerglide. I am confused because I thought all 2wd manual steering boxes for 60-66 were the same. Does anyone else know were I can buy a new or rebuilt unit that would bolt right up?

They're not the same or should I say there are several different ones. I had mine rebuilt cause I couldn't find the right one for my K-20. Search for a shop that rebuilds them. Mine came out Perfect and it was right at $200. Good luck and hope this helps.

Re: manual steering box for a '63
Thanks guys, sounds like a plan. Last part to repair.
Do I have to match up my rag joint or can I buy one of those From an online vendor? Never messed with a steering box. Also should I just replace the pitman arm? Looks like Dually Jams just reused his old ones.

Re: manual steering box for a '63
Check out American Classic Truck Parts. I bought a rebuilt box from there for $175 + $100 core charge. Got my box in 3 days I think!

Re: manual steering box for a '63
They've gone up to $250 now and no mention of a core. Guess a phone calls in order. Thanks for the heads up!!

Re: manual steering box for a '63
I took the box to a machine shop downtown Chicago that was recommended by a mechanic at work, rebuilt it for 225. The mechanic at the machine shop was very knowledgeable and did a good job. Came out nice, he resealed it and painted it and no more play in the steering. Maybe you can find a good local shops round you.

Re: manual steering box for a '63
Thanks for the reply. Everything feels tight, its just the pitman arm shaft seal that's leaking, so I may just do it here at the house.

Re: manual steering box for a '63
Yeah, I remember the rag joint thread. Actually picked up the rebuild kit for that last night. I'm going to do the steering box seals and bushings myself. Haven't done a steering box, but 1st time for everything.
