Well a discussion quickly led to an engine deconstruction earlier in my garage with a local member IHA1992 and we tore his factory 283 apart this evening. I looked at the conn rods and found them stamped like it had been apart before. Did the GM plants stamp their conn rod uppers and lowers in house or no? My 292 wasn't stamped so I figured I'd ask you gurus and your wealth of knowledge.

The rods were machined and matched but not marked as to where the go. That one has been apart before.

Ahhhhh we figured the engine had been apart before....oh well she's seized now needing a rebuild an new heads cuz previous owner decided to run water in place of coolant an rotted the radiator an thus lost coolant an over heated.

That just gives you a good excuse to slap a 572 in there an adapt 283 valve covers on it...that way when you race someone and pop the hood they'll think its a 283.

What heads are you considering putting on that 283? I run 416 heads from a 305 on mine. They definately give it a little more kick.

Better off to build a 350 and dress it to look like a 283. Same price at the end of the day, for a lot more HP and torque...

This of course is true, but if a 350 was the full answer...why would you want to disguise it as a 283?. To look original? Sometimes it is cool to ACTUALLY run something different, I have no beef against 350 engines, had several and got one on the floor right now. It ran great, but I decided a 292 was more unique and old school looking for the application. To me older obsolete motors are just more fun.

Tbh I haven't decided yet which heads really yet. Have done much time thinking what ill do with this motor. For one I kinda want it to be a sleeper motor looking stock but sure doesn't sound or drive like it lol. Prolly get a set of 202s or something but I wanna run the newer plugs not the old crush washer plugs this engine originally used.

EVERYYBODY an all run 350s. 350s dont get me wrong are awesome motors I mean really but something about being different is better an plus this being the original 283 for my 65 is awesome. Plus 283s are lil rev monsters I know like 327s. I already have a spare 350 thats gking back in my 65 til the 283 is ready just so I can tool around in the truck an have fun with it til the 283 is a go.

416 heads come from the earlier 305 high output motors. They use regular non-center bolt valve covers, have a 58 cc chamber like a 283 needs and 184/150 valves which is a bit larger than 283 power pack heads. They also have hardened valve seats for unleaded gas and assecory bolt bosses. They are still rather plentiful too. I learned about them from the h.a.m.b. but there is a ton of info about them all over the net because 350 budget rodders use them to bump up their compression due to the small chambers.
