454 Burnt Valve, REALLY?
What does a burnt valve sound like or does it make any sound at all? I think it was my crazy grandfather who taught me to put a piece of paper up to the tail pipe while running and if it tried to suck the paper in every once in a while then I had a burnt valve? How true is this? The reason I ask is my crazy grandfather is from NE Oklahoma and is known to hit the "moonshine" from time to time!

Re: 454 Burnt Valve, REALLY?
Put a vacuum gauge to direct manifold vacuum.
It'll show a burnt valve among other problems. Go to this site and scroll down for what the readings mean. http://www.secondchancegarage.com/public/186.cfm I would say the info source is more trustworthy than somebody who hits the "shine".

My 6.0 had a loud tick coming from the exhaust with one burnt valve.

Mine had some smoke out that side of the exhaust and also had the ticking sound.

Re: 454 Burnt Valve, REALLY?
Small tick that sounds like an exhaust leak. Not likely unless you're running boost or N2O, but could happen NA in rarer cases.

Re: 454 Burnt Valve, REALLY?
1. determine if the engine HAS a miss fire.
2. the dollar bill trick only works if its an exhaust valve. 3. vacuum gauge is still one of the easiest low buck diagnostic tools. if the needle is oscillating rapidly , something is wrong. 4. if all else fails a "leak Down" tester is your most reliable option. give a percentage of leakage per cylinder, then compare it to all others. Is this why you had a "Camshaft Replacement" related thread earlier? Desert |

Pull the plugs and take a compression test. That or a leak down test are the only way to know for sure with out taking the engine apart.
