Oil Pan Modification

Hello to all. I am in the process of modifying my oil pan. I am no expert, but I think I have the knowledge to pull this off. The reason for modifying my oil pan is My quest is be very low (low Life). How low can I go? Until I have the coins for porterbuilt's Extreme Drop Member, who knows. I don't. But I 'm sure my fellow techies will chime in. We will start with this:

Step number Three:
I cut about 1 3/4 inches out of the bottom of the pan. The pick up must be modified. I assume I need to cut out 1 3/4 inches. I should of taken measurements of the oil pick in relation to the oil pan before I cut it but oh well.

Step #5: Welding the oil pick up. This step I used a professional welder. A friend of mine told me this twice, "the Oil Pick Tube must be air Tight." This step was Critical. I would hate to save $500.00 And Spend $1500.00 on another Lq4, cam, push rods, etc. To me that is bad math. He guaranteed this pickup
95%. I like 95%.

Step #6:Test fitting time. I also had to weld the oil pick up brace back
together again. like I said on post #1, I am no expert but I get the job done. Oh BTW, this oil pick up & pan was my spare. the original stuff is currently on the truck.

What is the clearance for the Oil pick up tube from the oil pan floor? This is the magical question. Chime in at any time Chevy truck huggers. Price Break down:
1) Lsx Truck Oil pan-$50.00
2) (2) oil pick up Tubes-Free
3) Chop Cut Modify Pick Up-Free (ME)
4) Weld Oil Pick u p Tube-$25.00 (Professional)
5) Cut hole in oil Pan- Free (Professional)
6) Weld Oil Pan-??????

Some of you ask why mod an oil pan. I say why not. if all goes well ill save at least $250.00. as I made my measurements of my current oil pan and lsx setup, the only options was the Holley 302-1. it cost $369.00. to make all work together, I would have to purchase the dip stick and dip stick tube. these items may also need to be modified. the way I see it I just saved $250.00 for Porterbuilt.

umm for 150 buxs i'd just get the gm perforace pan that si shorter comes with pan , gasket, new dip dtick and pick up tube

The muscle car pan is 6.75 the the truck is 8.25. By the looks in the picture I dont know if 1.5 inches would be enough based on the picture.

Good evening truckdude239. It's funny you should say that, I did think about that long and hard. If you look up the measurements that's posted on the web of the gm muscle car oil pan or the LH8 oil pan measurements in relation to the standard truck oil pan, they have the same shape but are different about 3/4 of an inch. The Holley oil pan(302-1), has the same shape is about 6 inches deep at the rear. I didn't want to buy an oil pan and come up with the oil pan extending pass the front cross member. There are countless threads on this forum explaining different options. I wanna thank "low elco"for this idea. Also, hart rod gets some credit also.

Tinydb84, yeah rite. You are a moder. You'll be at this step soon enough. The oil pan is at the welder. It was dropped of today. The f body oil pan has to much length. Also, think about the engine placement. We all did stuff a little different. All of us used different parts, which made our swaps work.

If you plan later on using Nates extreme dropmember it's the front of pan that won't clear steering rack.....That's where the f-body pan comes in....jim

Jtp67-72, Damn. It is always something. This way threads are posted. Information is critical. When I looked at the extreme drop member, it said nothing about needing a special f body oil pan. Can you confirm this? I would like to see " how low the the truck gets (the front) with simple mods. Spindles, control arms, etc.

Didn't mean to brst your bubble...but it's close,,this is f body pan...u can use the ls pan chart to see the front sump differences...jim

Can anyone provide part#'s for a pan the will work, im putting a 6.0 with 4l65e in a 71swb with poterbuilt extreme drop. I see ebay has some low profile pan's around 5.5" tall. I never thought about the front drop member causing problems.
