Trans options for carb'd 5.3

Finally getting close to my ls swap. Hopefully. I'm looking to put the lm7 carb'd in my 2wd 85 c-10. Planning to put a bigger cam nothing to extreme. Was planning to do a th400 but just curious what else would be considered better. Would like to keep it simple. I know I have to buy engine adaptor plates to fit the engine but will the trAns all still line up with the drive shaft and everything?

It is not a hotrod, if it does not have the 3rd peddle! I run a stock (carbed) 5.3, 6spd Richmond box? 3.40 cogs in the back, 3.28 1st gear....2nd to 5th, close to a 2.20 Muncie.....76 on the OD ratio. cruise in OD, is 3100@105 mph, on a 29 " tire! You have to love the "screamin gears" under the old truck longhorn

It's got 3 petals. Gas,brake, ebrake. Any tips on the 5.3 install? What other parts do you think I need off the top of your head. Engine, engine mount plates, intake, msd box. Was just going to figure it out as I go, but any tips would be excellent

Re: Trans options for carb'd 5.3

Go to the price list thread for a bunch of part numbers.

The 400 is fine. I'd like another gear but if your rear gears are 3.08 or so you will be okay on the freeway.

The 400 trans will bolt right up the 5.3, but be missing 1 bolt hole (no biggy). I will leave flexplate selection/ adaptors to the guys running auto trans? as far as mounts on your square body, most of the guys like the dirty dingo sliders? Check the head to firewall clearance, on the rh side, as the engine sets farther to the rear in the 73-up, vs the 67-72's. If you have the clearance that you need, leave the trans & driveline in the same spot....too tight, hammer the firewall for clearance, or opt to move the engine & ahead /mod the driveshaft for the clearance.... (your choice)? On my truck, I used the edelbrock rpm (ls intake & controller). It is an MSD box, but with Edelbrock badging. A 670 avenger (Holley), should be a good addition for the street. I opted for Hooker streetrod shorties, to clear my mechanical clutch linkage, but you should have many other options with the auto trans(long or short tubes)? There again, I will let the rest of the bunch post up what fits your truck? Best of fun, longhorn

Re: Trans options for carb'd 5.3

how about a nice 4l80e? I understand that they are basically th400 with an overdrive and way stronger than a 4l60

On a carbed LS, the the 4l80-E, will still need a computer control....unless you opt for full manual shift? longhorn

Re: Trans options for carb'd 5.3

If you don't plan on driving it on the highway ever I would go with the TH400 but if you plan on some highway miles go with a 700R4.
The TH400 is much more stout than a 700R4 but unless you have over 400 HP you don't have to worry about it.

Re: Trans options for carb'd 5.3

I'd put in an overdrive trans in if you can work it....unless your rear end has tall gears. That's one of the main reasons later model engines get the fuel economy they do...because at cruise the engines run just a little above fast idle speed.

Re: Trans options for carb'd 5.3

Hello to all. Jstrong394, gmcGMCCustom is rite, is you can wing it, go with an overdrive. My setup is a carbed LQ4/Th400 with a 2400 stall (cam asks for it). In comparison to my other cars I want the overdrive. The th400 is tried and true. I have a free 4l60e I want use but I need a ecu to controll it. Good luck Clark.

Re: Trans options for carb'd 5.3

That was a pretty good read. Talked with my father in law and he has 4 th400's I can pick from free of charge. The one with 30k miles has the e brake assembly on it but, he says he has an extra short tail shaft for it. So guess that is what I'm gonna go with
