2002 z06 vette motor good deal?
Found a complete z06 motor with ecu and harness, only has 35k mikes on it. For $2000, was gonna put a 5.3 in my truck but this is only $2000 so I figured I'd buy it instead! What tranny do y'all recomend I put behind it? Gonna leave it mainly stock except probably just cam it.

That would be an LS6, so if you can verify the miles, id say its a great deal!

Re: 2002 z06 vette motor good deal?
I'm thinking a good 4l60e should be sufficient enough, I'm not trying to build a race truck, just a good reliable driver with a lil power.

Re: 2002 z06 vette motor good deal?
The 2002 Z06 was underated by 20HP which means it has 425HP from the factory and there is no way a stock 4L60E can handle that kind of power for an extended amount of time in a truck because of the weight and the amount of money it would cost to upgrade it to where it would even hold up for a while before it failed isn't worth it and don't be lured by the pipe dream of a 4L70E either because they have a super high failure rate in the TBSS because of the weight of the SUV.
I would put a 4L80E in it instead, it costs a little bit more but it can handle anything you throw at it. You will have to buy a TCU no matter which electronic auto transmission you go with because that ECU exclusively controls the engine since the Z06 only came with a manual transmission. IMO if you want a auto transmission the 4L80E is the only way to go for a high horsepower engine in a heavy truck. With the super low price you are getting the motor for you can afford the 4L80E and the TCU. |

Re: 2002 z06 vette motor good deal?
The PCM from the Z06 will work with an automatic transmission, you will just have to have it tuned for what ever trans you decide to put behind it. Keep in mind that adding a 4l80e to it will require some good tuning software since they are different than a 4l60e in terms of the tune, but any good tuner can handle this for you. You will have to modify the harness, and will have to add the automatic trans wiring to it, but that isn't hard to do, and you will most likely want to reroute some of the harness anyway to fit your application anyway.

I made an assumption that GM wouldn't add code for transmissions they knew they would never use in the car, but apparently I was wrong. The good news is you won't have to buy a TCU because they are expensive. Now you can focus on finding a low mileage 4L80E, Get R Dun! Last edited by Xeen; 09-04-2014 at 01:37 AM. |

Re: 2002 z06 vette motor good deal?
If you need a trans, I have a 4l60e that is a good core. I know the 3-4 clutches are burnt but can be rebuilt. I could make you a deal on it...
The harness mods are easy and I did my son's truck myself. I sent my PCM off for tuning and it fired up the first try. If you need help on the harness, give me a shout, we could work something out and I am local to you, real close since you are living in my old house...

With the weight, power, and size/weight of tires I've got on here, its not hard to burn out a 60e. I've also burned one out in a Bravada while towing, and blew up my old 700r4 by wanting to actually drive it....

Re: 2002 z06 vette motor good deal?
I looked at one sideways once and broke a forward sprag.
I farted while leaving a stop light and broke a sun shell.

For sure with the weight of the truck and to not have to worry about it when you decide to add a little more power (which we all do) the 4l80e is the way to go. The segment swap with HP Tuners is as simple as download your file, send it to them, they swap the data in the transmission segment and send it back to you. The wiring is very simple and you can use the terminals you pull from the round plug to wire up the ISS and not have to add any additional wire.

Re: 2002 z06 vette motor good deal?
You can do whatever you want to but it's a pain to put anything larger than a 20x8 wheel on the front of a c10, a 22x8 can be done with slosh tubz, but I have never seen anyone do a 24" I think that may be too much.

My buddy has 24's on the front of his 69 burb, running all porterbuilt extreme dropmember and components! But I'm leaning towards 22's for the front anyways! 24x15's out back for sure though!

Re: 2002 z06 vette motor good deal?
damn thats clean.
ONLY downside is that you have to basically narrow the front or run an offset that puts the wheel inward if you want to not have hella-camber when dropped out.

Re: 2002 z06 vette motor good deal?
I saw a guy do 24's on the back of his truck and they are so tall he had to use the 67/68 narrow rear axle with a 5 lug conversion and cut the top rail of his bed to get it to lay down, I was like umm...that's just not worth the expense and the bed mutilation, seriously it would be much, much simpler and a lot cheaper if you went with 20" front and rear, unless you just like pain and spending money.
