Welding on rear axle purches. Any advice??
Swapping a newer rearend in my 64 this weekend. I have new purches, ubolts, tracbar, and brackets. How is the best way to set pinion angle? Is there anything specific I do, or just tip it slightly up towards the transmission and call it good? Thanks, Jared

I do it on the truck. just bolt it together. set your angle , usually a good starting point is to line up with engine angle then tack weld the perches on. remove and final weld. but really depends on tire size and ride height if you are modifing the chassis

truck has all factory suspension. The rear tires will be pretty close to stock height as well.

Your pinion angle needs to match the angle of your tail shaft/output shaft within 1° of each other. Needs to be matched/set at ride height with any load you carry. A search of the board will find more than enough info on pinion angles and drive line design.
Also prep work is key to good welds, but If you are attempting this I assume your welding skill already tell you to grind all rust from all weld areas.

Quickest and simplest to find http://www.hotrodhigh.ca/PinionAngle.html
Also note If i recall you dont want to exceed 4°-5° total angle in any joint it can cause vibrations

Idealy you would want the pinion 3 degrees down from the angle of the trans, reason being as your under load from normal driving the pinion will torque upward.

Rich that would be in a leaf spring truck, in a trailing arm setup, setting them to an angle within 1° due to the fact that they don't "Twist on the spring" would be correct. Even on a leaf truck personally, I would only set the pinion 1° to 1.5° nose down due to the fact that once you reach cruising speed the spring will unload most of the twist imparted during acceleration. but then again if you get a vibration that is drive shaft related.. gonna take some fine tuning
