Big swap here. whats different?
okay guys need some advice here! the old straight 6 dropped a valve the other night, and the trusty saginaw 3 speed decided it was time to go too. at my local pull a part you can get any v8 with accesories for 175$ any automatic with converter for 75$. whats different transmission wise? crossmember? driveshaft?
thanks guys.

Re: Big swap here. whats different?
i just finished collecting parts for my swap, from a saginaw 4 speed to a 700r4. here is what i needed:
torque converter and bolts lockup converter crossmember flexplate and bolts trans cooler lines (youll need a new radiator or trans cooler if you dont have one already) starter shift linkage shifter tv cable bellhousing bolts driveshaft will need to be shortened or lengthened thats all i can think of now, but i think i covered it for the most part. |

If included and have time
I'd get the engine mounts and bolts,(even if you replace them)even the wire harness right to the plug.(they prob move spots) maybe cruise control? I'd leave the manifolds on till your home. not sure if the gauges to sensors are different.... but I know the gas gauge goes faster! lol

Re: Big swap here. whats different?
ill be honest i dont know the ins and outs of it, all i know is that it was recommended to me to do it. this will be my first swap and i spent a decent amount of time doing research so that i wont have to stop in the middle and get another part. as far as the driveshaft goes...if you find one out of a truck that carries the same drivetrain that you're going for i dont see what the issue would be, but i can't confirm that to be true.

Your Saginaw gave up? What happened? 4 bolt or 5?

Re: Big swap here. whats different?
it got to when i would push and hold the clutch in idling it would make this grinding noise like the flywheel rubbing, but i laid under it and had a friend hold it in and it was coming from the trans,

Re: Big swap here. whats different?
May be the throw-out bearing. Check it when you remove the trans, if that's the problem then you have a good transmission to sell.

Re: Big swap here. whats different?
It's more likely that it's the throw out bearing if it's only making noise when the clutch pedal is depressed.

Re: Big swap here. whats different?
Transmission, as you probably know, should not turn when the clutch is depressed. I had a bad pilot bearing that ate up the trans input shaft or possibly excess wear on the crank thrust bearing letting the crank/flywheel move forward into something. That would be a lot of wear! Might try to pry the flywheel forward and aft to check for end play.

Re: Big swap here. whats different?
Hard to kill a Saginaw. If I was closer Id buy it if it was a 5 bolt truck trans.
