Are our trucks suppose to have rosette rivets on the vin tag?
I have a 63 GMC and was looking at the VIN a few weeks back while sanding the cab and prepping it for paint and the rivets caught my eye. All my cars and trucks from the 60's and 70's have had rosette rivets. These look like plain old rivets. Anyone have a picture of what rivets I should have on here. Starting to get worried someone may have swapped the cab and I want to be sure it is suppose to have rosette styled ones or am I wrong. Thanks

They should be rosette rivets but I wouldn't be to alarmed if the cab was swapped, as long as the vin matches the title.

My '66 has them. My '65 has regular pop rivets.

They fall off alot too when the truck is in the body shop getting painted so they might have just replaced it with normal rivets.

Alright good to know guys. I wonder if the 60-63's had plain rivets like some 50's cars I've seen or maybe it had a cab swap. Thanks

Re: Are our trucks suppose to have rosette rivets on the vin tag?
From what I’ve read the VIN tags were spot welded in place from the 1950’s up to about 1964. When GM switched to rivets, the earliest installations used plain rivets until the rosette rivets became available. It appears from all the different examples that have been posted on different sites that uniform implementation didn’t occur for several years, depending on what the individual manufacturing plant had available.

Thanks guys. Iwas reading another thread on registering your truck and how they could confiscate it if you had the wrong rivets or something like that and it had me worried. Mine looks like MatcoTools63's. Thanks for posting that. Makes me feel better now.

Re: Are our trucks suppose to have rosette rivets on the vin tag?
Both types (round and rosette) were used randomly through about the middle of the '65 model year, then the rosette rivet was used exclusively.

Re: Are our trucks suppose to have rosette rivets on the vin tag?
Gentleman ,
Please before you remove the VIN tag on anything check with DMV 1st . Removing the tag without following your states process is 50 state illegal . Some of what is proposed in this thread is illegal and for that reason this thread is closed . Food for thought . Several members of Law Enforcement are members here |
