power ateering box install

Ok. I know about the plates u can buy to make the conversion, and if thats all it was, id buy them.
Pancaked xmember 1.5" and want to raise the steering box up the same to alleviate any bump steer.
Its off a 1900 suburban, so im making a template from the old frame section for hole patterns.

Any suggestions for this?

65 gmc 3/4 ton with 90 suburban crossmember swap.

I suggest you p.m Capt. Fab. He knows about these things and he's a vendor here for power steering conversion components.

With raising the steering box and adapter plate above the frame 1.5" you will need to gusset the adapter plate to the top flange of the frame. And then likely between the top and bottom flange of the frame as well.

Thanks for the recommend AcampoDave

Re: power steering box install

I have seen the Captainfab plate and have read quite a few threads about them and they were very helpful. As soon as i have it figured out in my head or paper i may buy one. But if it is stronger and easier with a larger plate, i don't mind making one.

I agree with welding gussets, they will be a must. My question is how to locate it? i know it moves 1.5" up, but what about getting the correct angle and horizontal location (front to back). Which holes in the frame are the same? any to the new box?

I may be over thinking it, but i prefer to research and do it correct the first time.
If it's easier to buy the plate modify, measure, and weld, i'll take the easier road.

Thanks!

Re: power ateering box install

There are not any existing holes in the frame that line up for a power steering box in the normal location let alone 1.5" up. What I would do is start with locating the adapter plate on the frame in the normal location and then just move it vertical 1.5". Then you will have to support and reinforce from there. You will also likely need to trim the bottom of the frame for the pitman arm and steering linkage clearance.
