65 Fuel Tank Odor

Something must be wrong. I can't seem to lose the fuel smell in the cab. After filling up, the odor is just so damn strong and it's been weeks now since putting fuel in.

I just replaced the sending unit, but wonder if there is some venting that needs to be done or connected? This tank is behind the seat of course.

I do have a fuel cell for under the bed, but took it out because I didn't like the fuel door on the side of the bed.

Since I don't drive this truck every day, I was thinking of keeping it simple.....there must be something wrong in the way I have the tank hooked up. Any ideas?

The most common problem is in the fuel hose connecting the filler neck to the fuel tank inlet. Either it's old and cracked, or loose on one end or the other, and it can be difficult to replace. The next issue is the cap itself which is vented. If the window is left down on a hot day, ambient heat will expand gas in the tank and the fumes come pouring right out the cap. There's nothing that will fix that problem other than keeping the window rolled up. The grommet around the filler neck can also be dried/cracked and let the fumes from the cap enter the cab. Other problems could be a bad sending unit gasket, or a leak at the pickup fitting, or somewhere on the tank, but those would be rather obvious.

yeah check out the sending unit,mine cracked at the fitting where the hard line goes into the sending unit. when i fill up it leaks outta that tiny crack and the smell of gas is pretty bad

I will check out the filler tube. Is it just a straight tube or is there supposed to be a vent hose that connects somewhere on the filler tube?

I will also check for cracks on the new sending unit. That would suck.

The filler hose is just a straight piece of fuel resistant rubber hose.

It has an upper and lower clamp that can be a real pain to access. Some people pull the tank and tip it to make it easier to access the clamps. I know I replaced the hose without touching the tank, but it was nearly 20 years ago so I don't remember the details. It seems to me I may have loosened one of the clamps and cut the hose, allowing me to pull the neck up out of the body, making it easier to get the new hose in place. After that I replaced the original clamps with gear clamps with hex heads. This allowed tightening the clamps with a small rachet or end wrench, which was much easier than trying to manage a screwdriver.

Also, these tanks had old school venting. The gas cap is vented, and that's it. There is no other venting for the tank. If a non-vented cap is installed it will likely collapse the tank eventually as fuel is drawn into the engine, or at the least the engine will starve when the pump can't pull any more fuel.

I am having the same problem. Not fun smelling fuel constantly. I smelled around and noticed when I put my nose inside by the rubber filler hose I could smell fuel around the hose but nothing at the sending unit. No wetness just the vapors. I'm going to try to tighten the hose clamps and hope that does it. Seems pretty tight in there to have to replace that hose.

So now I am wondering if my $5.95 chrome gas cap is not vented! I replaced it recently which could be the problem.

Changed the filler tube and filler tube hose. After removing, I could see a 4" crack in the hose.....obviously it was the hose which was the problem...all replaced, full tank of gas, and no more smell. Isn't that easy?

Found my problem as well. When you turn the cap all the way tight there was not a tight seal. So I now turn the cap until I feel the cap is tightly sealed to the gasket. No more fumes and glad I didn't have to squeeze into that area for the hose replacement.

I searched and found this thread because when I was filling my truck today some of the gas leaked into the cab. I looked up in there with a flashlight...which in itself is basically impossible without removing the seat. I cannot yet imagine how you guys were able to replace the fuel filler hose without loosening the tank. However, I am going to have to go for it and figure it out because it is no fun having fuel drip right into the passenger compartment.

It's tight but you can loosen the hose clamp and pull the filler neck out then you can replace the hose this would also be a good time to replace the rubber gasket for the filler neck on the cab.
I just did mine 2 weeks ago.

Where did you guys get the filler hose? What diameter is it? I am wondering if I can get it at parts house rather than ordering online.

Don't know the diam., but to find what you need locally, you may have to go to a big truck facility--had to do that for a 4-inch diameter hose in fixing my neighbor's fun car, a Jeepster body on a VW frame. Cost me like $4.

May as well order it online and get the rubber seal for the cab. That way you can work this through the hole in the cab side to make life much easier.

My truck had the same smell in the cab. Turned out there was a pin hole in the tank...Wound up relocating it.

What about the guys that are laying frame what frame mounted tanks are yall using? I am kinda iffy about the rear tank dragging?

The problem I have is on hot days the fuel leaks out past the cap and runs down the side of my truck, sometimes I put a container under it so it doesn't ruin my bitumen driveway
