Vent Window Rivets - Settign tool

Hey gang,

I want to try and finish my doors and of cource a large part of that is new rubber in the vent window assemblies. I can chicken out and buy the new assembly pre-made and just drop them in ($250.00 a pop), but would like to at least TRY to do it on my own. I seen a few threads that speak on this but I think I need a tool that will set the rivets, using a hand punch and hammer is going to be a PITA, do they make a tool I can purchase that will help?

I found this on ebay , but was unsure if it is correct or not for the use. I'll only use the tool for these vents - one time use I suppose.

grind down the tip of your "pop rivet" tool and use that....

I used pop rivets on mine with no problems. The pop rivet gun I used came from Harbor Freight and has interchangeable dies for different size rivets. The dies were narrow enough to get into the channel with the pop rivets. The only choice that I made was to leave the "pivot rivet" alone and instead remove the two rivets that hold that bracket to the frame. The "pivot rivet" is the one that I think gives most folks a problem. See the write up that Mister C references for this issue.

PS Your 1960 vents are likely to be different from the pictures that these folks are using for a 1964-1966.

I just finished mine and I suggest pop rivets over the setting tool/steel rivets. As careful as I was, the setting tool bends/distorts the rigid vertical seal when trying to mushroom over the end of the rivet. Its like the process is to much for the seal to with stand and survive the install. Practice with some steel rivets on some scrap be fore you take a run at it. I used 3/32" all aluminum rivets with the aluminum pull shank. It will nestle down in there and the tail will be pretty flush. wont rust and you can dress them down a bit if needed.

Joe, the Sears pop rivet gun I have leaves a long tail, do you grind that off?

You can trim the tails off so they are flush. Usually when the tails brakes off long you are using a grip length to long. I use an all aluminum rivet/tail type that is kind of short, just enough length to work. These wing window seals don't need to much clamping force from the rivet or it will distort. An old Fart glass guy (my uncle Joe) showed me this trick, he also glues the seal in place (carefully) then rivets it after so it will stay in place .This assists the rivets in holding seal and makes it easier to assemble by yourself.
