Lower Radiator Hose for 65 C10 and 5.3L
As you can see from the photo I need help coming up with a lower hose for my radiator. I'm using a stock 65 C10 radiator and the engine is a 5.3L any help would be appreciated.
Thanks |

Re: Lower Radiator Hose for 65 C10 and 5.3L
Anyone know if the straight thermostat housing made by CRS for the LS1 will fit on the 5.3l?

I had to use one of the aluminum bendable hoses with rubber ends so it would fit, tried several others, even went to get an aluminum exhaust pipe bent but didn't work

I used the ls hose and just shortened it on the motor side.

That should work. The truck and LS1 fbody pumps are pretty much an identical casting, and the thermostat housing should interchange.

I have a similar situation. It is working but it isn't pretty. My radiator has LS inlet and outlet sizes but not a good location.

This is probably the best option out there, unless you spend a lot of hours at the parts store trying to find one with the same bend and correct diameter.

Re: Lower Radiator Hose for 65 C10 and 5.3L
The best fit is a 2010 Camaro water pump. It solves both hoses. The top neck is on the driver's side, allowing a typical GM top hose (I used one from '05-'08 vette), and the thermostat housing is angled downward, allowing use of the LS truck hose. It aligns with truck brackets, no spacers required.
The entire pump assembly is $160 on RockAuto, and includes thermostat, housing and tensioner with pulley. It requires relocating the idler with a $26 kit from Dirty Dingo. You may get by with only the T-stat housing, but the top hose on the truck pump is ridiculous.

Re: Lower Radiator Hose for 65 C10 and 5.3L
I used a GATES 21615. I think it's originally for a '98 Cherokee with the 4.0 L6 engine.
I'm running a GEN IV water pump. It may be different for the GEN III. It has the larger end for the larger outlet on the LS-style water pumps and the smaller end for our year radiators. Cut it to length on the radiator side. You'll end up cutting about half of the hose off. http://www.rockauto.com/dbphp/x,cata...TES_21615.html Last edited by Willie Makeit; 12-15-2014 at 08:40 PM. |

Re: Lower Radiator Hose for 65 C10 and 5.3L
Yep, I'm working on the truck on Christmas eve.
This is my third lower radiator hose setup. The last one is shown above, not pretty. My radiator (Griffin) has a 1-1/2" outlet, same as the LS lower inlet. I looked at the Dayco 71990 hose (late model silverado LS lower) mentioned by Jer64. It looked like if I could get the LS inlet angle correct the hose would work. So I got the Mr. Gasket #2670 Swivel housing for LS motors. I cut 6" off the long straight end of the hose and connected it to the T-stat housing. I cut 1/2" off the short end. That gave a perfect fit. No stress on the hose at all. Here is a pic from on top and from underneath. There is plenty of clearance and I think it is long enough to allow for engine movement. No leaks so far. Now for the upper.....

Re: Lower Radiator Hose for 65 C10 and 5.3L
I went to Summit Racing and started using the filters on the left hand side of the screen to zero in on hoses I could use to build the one I needed.
I think I wound up with 3x Camaro hoses & 2x 1.5" Speedway Motors hose-to-hose nipples. Sure, it's a $40 hose by the time you are done. If you can't find an OEM fit hose that is just what you need, though, this is a good option. No kinks, no flow restrictions.

Re: Lower Radiator Hose for 65 C10 and 5.3L
That Camaro water neck will fix that kink in the hose, and can be used on the truck pump.
Btw- when I'm taking about a Camaro pump, it is NOT an f-body pump, and no spacers are required, only the idler relocation...
