Powerglide install

I'm getting ready to replace my 3 speed manual with a powerglide trans. My truck is a 64 c10 with a 250 inline 6 and I have two questions. The first question is do I need to remove the rear engine mount crossmember or can it stay in place ( looks to me that it needs to come out.) ?

The second question is regarding the rear trans mount. There is currently a factory crossmember with the parking brake hardware attached in the general area that I will need to install the trans mount. I'm not sure what to do here.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

You will need to remove the bell housing. You will also need a transmission cross member for a mount. I believe you'll have to convert your emergency brake cable setup to one that is 1966 model. That brake cross member is not useable as a tranny cross member. I am not sure exactly how they did it in 64 with the automnatic cross member and that emergency brake brace.

I am gathering the parts to eventually swith my 64 over to an automatic also. Don't forget you'll have to have a radiator with tranny cooler lines or add an aftermarket tranny cooler.

there is an OEM rear tran crossmember for the powerglide and it has the attachments for the emerg brake. that emerg brake cross member is not really sturdy enough for a rear c/member. you will also have to remove that rear eng cross memb to put in a p/glide

Thanks to both of you for the good info. I have found both the 153 and 168 tooth flex plates and from what I have read I think I will need the offset mount starter motor. Any thoughts on this ?

Ron, are you sure that isn't a '66 trans crossmember? Those hooks are there to hold the cable that goes across from side to side. I believe this is what should be in a '63-'65 with an auto trans.

To the OP. If you don't already have a Powerglide, I would highly suggest going with a TH350 instead. It's the same length if you get one with the short shaft and you'll have 3 speeds instead of just 2. It makes for a much nicer driver IMO.

X2 the th350 make the truck drive like a car, I also had a shift kit put in in so no more power slide

your right. that did come out of my ambulance and that was a 66.
the c/members are the same though, just the emerg brackets are different and they don't look that compkicated

I got a rebuilt 1968 aluminum PG for free, plus after months of searching I just found the parts to make the kickdown function. I'm staying with the inline 6 for now.......kinda going for the rat rod low and slow look. Thank you for the info.
