'74 "1 ton" 4wd
I'm looking at a '74 truck billed as a one ton, and I'm trying to figure out what axels are under it...rear end is dually, front is NOT the bud style wheels (e.g. completely different rims). So, is the front a dana 44 or? I seem to recall '78 was the first year a "real" 4wd one ton was produced, and before that though the rear was essentially a 1 ton, the front was the same as the 3/4.... I'm planning on using it for plowing and hauling sand / logs / stone (it is a dump).

No such animal factory.
The D44 is all that was available in these bodies in those years. The D60 front was not available till 76. What they are selling is a 3/4 ton. All one tons of that vintage were 2wd. You could also not get a 454 4wd till 88 in trucks and 93 in Subs and Crews.

If the front axle only has 3 u-bolts and 2 bolts directly in the housing on the passenger side then it is a Dana 60, if not it's probably a 44 unless someone put a later corp 10 bolt in it, which in my opinion is better than the 44 anyway since it will have 3" axle tubes instead of 2-3/4".

Also, 1977 was the first year for the K30/K3500 (chevy/GMC) or the first year of true 1 ton 4wd pickups for GM at least in this body style. Along with this, you couldn't get a 400 small block in a 2wd truck...

One point of clarification-as it is a dually rear, would it be the same rear end as in the 2wd 1 tons, or a lighter duty unit? And what would it be...(I'm new to chevy's of this vintage...please forgive my ignorance!) Thank you again! Couchsachraga |
