i spoke to a guy at aamco today. really just to get comparison prices on installs, rebuilds, info etc.

they dont get into 700r4 swaps apparently. just rebuilds, but in talking about the lockup, he said some guys forego that by installing a 'clutches' torque converter. i did a search and couldn't find any real info on this. can anyone enlighten me on this and is it a better way to go than trying to hook up an electronic lockup?

Not having a lockup is going to make a huge amount of heat.
There is a hydraulic lockup kit that works well but it's doesn't fit some of the later 700 valve bodies.

My advise would be to keep the lockup in a computer controlled car . Nothing wrong with a non-lockup 700r4 they work great like that but ,, mostly in non computer controlled cars , 4l60e is basically the same trans , but the computer controlled version . The more you deviate from the original design with the transmission , the more "issues" you will run into

street truck? keep the lockup.. its not that hard to wire up..
drag truck? don't need it.. just my opinion, im not a trans guy..

thanks guys. sounds like its best to just keep an electronic lockup.

the lockup in a 700 is not electronic. its operated by 12 volts and a pressure switch..you can get a 700 convertor without the lockup clutch,it usually only used in very high stall applications.and in my opinion the 700 sucks without the lockup..the MPG increase is very worth it,..and when its locked up its direct...no converter slipping at all=no heat=lower RPMs=better MPG

yeah sorry, im not that great with my transmission lingo. thats what i meant meant though.
