I'll backup the idea to use decent battery cables! I use 1 gauge on my trucks, as it was the heaviest I could commonly find. With a good battery, this makes a noticeable difference in cranking speed. Consider that a wire rated for 500 amps continuosly is about 13/16" in diameter without the insulation.
