I pulled a complete set up out of a 2001 suburban and am wanting to trade my 4x4 for a 4x2 4L60E. A guy messaged me today wanting to trade me a 1998 4L60E.

Do you guys know what year(s) 4L60E transmission will be compatible with my 2001 or am I SOL on this trade? I am looking to do the least amount of modification to the electronics.


Worse case scenario I did get some info about a guy on eBay selling the extended shaft and tail housing to make it a 4x2 for 100$. It would be nice to just trade someone straight across.

If its actually a 98, then it should also be the 300mm input, which would work. If its an early 98 or he's wrong, its possibly the older style which you don't want to bother with. The 300mm sometimes are referred to as "LS" 4l60es

But whats the big difference? A friend of mine used a 1996 Caprice 4L60E for his 5.3L swap.

'98 was the first year for 300mm 4L60E's. V8 F-Bodies were the only vehicles that had them in '98 (Excluding Corvette because they are oddball transmissions)

'96 & up 298mm 4L60E's can be made to work with a Crank Spacer & redrilling the flexplate for the torque converter bolts.

You may want to just get the 2WD conversion parts and have a trans shop do the job, plus go thru the transmission and verify it's good to go. The 4L60E doesn't seem to be the most durable transmission, so it would be good to have someone give it a clean bill of health.

Yes, A longer Stator Support shaft, Helps keep the Input Drum stable.
Larger Converter Clutch. Hence the 300mm.

The Modular Case is the biggest strength advantage, However GM made 245mm, 298mm & 300mm versions using the Modular case.

It doesn't flex like the earlier "Cast-in" open bellhousing 4L60E/700R4 cases.
