72 Suburban - Your thoughts appreciated

Guys,

I know we have a what's it worth section and wanted to list this here for the Suburban traffic.

Here is a 1972 Suburban that was listed on Craigs for $10,500 I just missed out on in January. Screaming good deal I thought.

A reseller bought it and has it listed for sale. $16,900

Supposedly rust free brought into the midwest from California and restored years ago. The folks listing on CL were the ones who brought it in and restored it.

What value would you put on it? Casually looking for a few months it doesn't seem 'Burbs above $12,000 sell....unless they are well optioned and pristine.

Appreciate your ballpark thoughts!

The pictures look like they were taken with some special affect, so it's hard to see any real detail in the finish of the paint.

With out looking at the under carriage, and the engine compartment it's hard to say..

Seems like a very nice Suburban for the money, since all three benches are there and are wrapped in OE covers for the model year of the truck. So at least the interior looks clean, complete, and comfortable. No picture of the headliner, so it's either still there or not. The OE headliner is fragile, so it either survives very nice or shabby. If it isn't there, what did they do for a headliner if there even is one. My guess, is there isn't anything there from what I can see from the pictures.

Just on the interior, if you were to restore one like this it would cost approximately 3,000.00 alone.

The body and paint, an estimate would be 10,000.00+
The wheel and tires, my estimate would be about a grand.

So the asking price is close to what it would be if you were to do all this on another Suburban, not including what it would take for drive train, suspension, and exhaust.

What's a "Craigslist App Watcher?"

I use Craiglist pro from Google play downloaded on my smart phone. An option allows the application to continiously search for your saved searches. When a match is made you are notified.

It is like using a fish finder. Getting a bite, setting the hook and reeling it in is still pretty fun.

I've been looking pretty seriously at highly optioned 1972 suburbans since early January trying to find the right one to buy. This one is definitely on of the nicer suburbans, but those shiny pictures make me wonder if they're trying to hide something or make it look a little better than it actually is. Without A/C or the highlander option I would say it's priced a little high and you are right on with your $12k range. If you're seriously interested, take a look at the SPID to make sure the current options match the build. That's my $.02, good luck finding the right suburban.

One last thing, the seat belt color is odd to me as well. Didn't they normally run black on black?

Thanks Heliarcn. If I decide to pursue this one I will check the SPID. The Craigs listing had more and better pictures which were pretty compelling. I watched a nice 402 Burb on Ebay for sale not move at $14,500 for two months then take six weeks at $12,500 before it was pulled. The 12k plus burbs are for sale for ever and haven't moved in months, unless they are nicely optioned and exceptional as you are looking for.

The seat belts I don't know and anticipate the experts here will step in.

The Blazer thread you reference is kind of an anomaly.

Usually they turn into FS and WTB threads, and eventually get shut down.

There have been Suburban locator style threads, but they too have turned the corner and were closed or just sank to the bottom.

Personally I see the blazer more common than the Suburbans, so there are more sightings of advertisements to share amongst your friends here. So the thread tends to stay afloat like the one in the Blazer section.

I find any burbs above $8gs sit along time. The market for them is very small compared to the blazers & trucks. $16g is high for that burb & it doesn't matter "what" it costs to build you don't pay top dollar because somebody else did lol

Thanks Dubs, I've been seeing the same with higher priced Burbs not moving. They stay for sale for ever. And they are not as popular as the trucks it seems as indicated by lower prices plus the traffic here. At any one time there are 10 time more viewers in the truck section than in the Burb section.

I agree $16,000 is way high for the blue one. It is interesting I find very few, or no 2wd burbs, that are really nicely built with updates...interior, suspension, LS swap, AC, etc...like I do with the trucks or Blazers. Must be a popularity thing again.
