steering wheel cleanup / resto
Previous owner had the truck painted back in the mid 90's. Guy did the interior too. Unfortunately the gauge bezel, column, and wheel turned out like crap. The paint on the wheel is half worn, half chipped. I am looking for a paint stripper that will remove the spray paint but not affect (melt, warp, gouge) the material the wheel is made from. The wheel is solid with only a thin stress line near the hub. I would like to reveal the worn look of the wheel before it was painted.
Thanks in advance. |

Re: steering wheel cleanup / resto
Depends on what the PO painted it with. I'd try some acetone on a spot on the back that's not visible. Maybe he just rattle canned it on and it'll take it off.

Re: steering wheel cleanup / resto
Brake-Kleen did the trick. Took off all the rattle can paint and did not harm the original plastic of the wheel. I sprayed the rag first as not to soak anything.
Girlfriend gets in and says what happened to the steering wheel? All the black wear thru is now visible. It does feel much smoother now that all those tiny paint chips are gone. I dig the vintage look. 52 years of hands on driving right in front of me. |
