Engine sources
Those of you that are doing LS engine swaps for a living, where are you sourcing your engines? They are apparently gold plated here.

Re: Engine sources
I got mine at a local wreck yard. Heard it run before they pulled it.
LKQ online usually has stashes of these things on ebay. You say they are gold plated up there. What are they asking for them? details/mileage/full accessories. etc.

Re: Engine sources
LQK seems to be the go to place for them around here. Hard to get one at the drop of a hat.. most of the time they got waiting lists for the better ones.

Re: Engine sources
I watched craigslist for 2 months...
"Chevrolet 2500hd 6.0" I found a broke down truck with 200K for $1000. stripped the motor, trans, ecu and harness and sold the chassis and body for $800

Re: Engine sources
If you got connections a dealer auction is a good place but you got to have a dealer liscence..I know a guy that bought a caddy that had minor fire damage at one for $800..turned around stripped and sold $2000 worth parts and kept the ls and 6spd to go in camaro...I can't ever have that luck.

Re: Engine sources
Spaldings is right here in Spokane. They want anywhere from $2000 to $10000 for a complete drop out. They are the only yard in 300 miles that has newer vehicles.

Re: Engine sources
$10000....ouch....you'd be better off to buy a whole good running truck and strip it down...that's unreal..

Re: Engine sources
When I went shopping for my 5.3, I went to ebay and made a selection from Bow Auto out of New Hampshire. Very good people to deal with, the price was good, and it was a complete drop-out package. The engine arrived within a work week, on a truck with a drop gate (my request), the driver put his hand truck under the pallet and put the engine right in my garage for me. The engine was very securely palleted and wrapped in plastic wrap to keep all the components together. The engine had been degreased and was theoretically ready for install. All with a 6mo. warranty

Re: Engine sources
The $10000 was for a 2014 camaro engine and trans with 0 miles. We have a little bit of a hotrod community here. Today was the annual Lost in The 50s car show. There was about a dozen LS swaps there. Last year there was 2.

Re: Engine sources
I don't do the swaps for a living, but if you're OK with using 4.8s, try your local U-Haul service center. The one near me has a huge stack of 4.8s that they pulled from wrecked trucks, and were asking $500 for a fully dressed example (no ECU, but otherwise complete).

Re: Engine sources
Craigslist, I found a 2004 with 87K for $300 with wire harness. I also know a place in MN that has them for a good price.

Re: Engine sources
Bought a complete running truck, rotted and wrecked but ran great. Parted it out and had most parts sold within a week. I'm $200 in now, and once I scrap the cab and chassis I should be even.
Also, try the local insurance auctions. Near me they had several Silverados for sale at a buy it now price of $650, even some 6.0L trucks. Issue is you either need to have a dealer license or buy thru a broker. Could still be a good deal even after the fees, I just decided to skip the hassle and buy a rotted junker off craigslist, plenty of those around here. |

Re: Engine sources
I found a 2004 Cadillac Escalade ESV Platinum with the LQ9 with 132K miles on Craigslist for $2000. The fuel pump was bad, swapped it out and it fired up and ran like a champ. I kept the engine and everthing I would need for my swap and then some and parted out what was left for around $4000 and I still have a few parts left to sell.
