Hey, Jon, I like your idea (esp. since I'm considering the same!)--already bought a space-saver. Could you re-post with a pic or 2? Deciding whether to mount standing or lying flat with a bottle jack in the wheel well.

Van Pershing's Idea Page has plenty of useful stuff. This page shows a fleetside truck with the spare sitting inside an inverted wheel house. That location won't work for a stepside but there would be room behind the rear axle to do the same idea . . . that is unless the under the bed tank is in the way. LOL!

I took a factory wheel and had a small tire put on it. Kind of like having a space saver but with a real tire. Then I fit it under my crossbed tool box. It was a perfect fit between the bottom of the box and the bedfloor.

How about a skinny tire behind the seat where your old gas tank was. My back tires are bigger than my front. I guess I will have to carry 2 spare tires.

No matter where it is, the main thing is that it be secured to the truck. A loose spare becomes a projectile in a wreck.

On my 65 Suburban I installed a 31gallon tank from a Blazer. I got the tank from JC Whitney with a sending unit for a couple hundred bucks. The tank was the same depth as my original Sub tank but more square. Modified a couple of straps from a later model truck, ran new line and it worked. The only thing I didnt have when I finished was a guage as the 73-87 guage was way too big.

My '64 was a 3-tanker (cab tank, and two saddle tanks) when I bought it. I removed the cab tank because I like the extra room, and decided to keep the saddles and use a '73-'87 dual tank selector switch to control the tank switching. There were cheezy doors pop-riveted into the bedsides to gain access to the fillers, but they have now been welded up and I'll have small fuel doors in the bedfloor. If you look at my '64 build thread, check out post# 619 for how I did the tanks.

As far as the spare tire, I didn't want to have it laying in the bed because I don't like the look. I also don't like how low the tire hangs on the factory setup behind the rear axle. I DO NOT want to see the spare tire from behind! I was raised my bedfloor 3" to clear my c-notch, so I built a new behind-the-axle mount using parts from an S-10. See post# 568 and 589 for how I did it.
