sorry, may have jumped the gun... does the tach require a transmitter to work in '66 C10?

I don't know, pulled it out of a running 66 farm truck, everything worked fine 2 years ago, was going to use it myself, but going with a ls swap.

It worked on my old 66 farm truck just fine.

You'd need the model # of the back of the tachometer to know if it needs a box or not.

If it's in fact a '64-66 then it does not need a transmitter. It is also likely for an 8, not 6 cylinder. Take the cover off the back of the cluster and the tach will probably look like this original '65 8 cyl :
