anyone run a newer rear in there c10?

I came across a 02 ish tahoe in the junkyard didn't think much of it until I seen the police written on the doors only thing left is the rear end and body parts and I checked the rear it's posi and they want 300 for it but I think I can talk them down a bit. Anyone run these or a similar rear in there truck? It was missing the brakes I'm assuming it's a disc brake rear but I'm not 100 percent sure. Are These Pretty Decent rears? I didn't have a tape measure on me so I'm going to go back if it's around the same width if so I'm probally gona try to get it. My rear is on its last leg and it's an open rear plus I just did a flip kit today but didn't weld the perches on yet (not driving it) so it be a good time to swap in a better rear. I'm not concerned with all the old coil spring brackets and stuff on the tahoe I'll just torch them off and weld the perches on I was just wondering if these are a decent swap and not like a foot wider or something. If it won't work what's a good donor rear?

That differential will be a 8.6" 10 bolt and will be at least 2.75" wider than the differential you currently have. I'm not sure on the exact width. Strength wise, it should be fine. It will also have Metric wheel studs, so you will need different lug nuts.

As for other differentials to use, the '63 to early '70 12 bolts are the same width of 62". The late '70 to '86 in the C/K10 series and '87-'91 R/V1500 series differentials will be 1.5" wider at 63.5". The '88-'98 C/K1500 series differentials will be 2.75" wider at 64.75".

When you measure that differential, you will want to measure WMS to WMS (Wheel Mounting Surface). That is the dimension that matters. Measuring backing plate to backing plate as many do is highly inaccurate.

Interested in what you find out. I have been contemplating a new (to me) posi for a long time from a donor. Just never pulled the trigger. Post up some measurements for the rest of us!

A differential I almost forgot about is the mid 2000's Colorado/Canyon differential. They are 6 lug and I believe measure 61". Member Oklahomaduner put one in his '66 GMC.

One more thing to look at with newer rearends.
They might be 6 bolt but not all are 6x5.5. And the centre bore on the wheels are different.
You might need mismatched wheels on your truck.

Thanks for all the info. I know the new trucks have a smaller bore I was going to have my buddy machine me some hubcentric rings so I can run my steelies if they fit over the brakes until I can find a set of the 22 inch transport wheels I want. I guess I have to see if I can fit the extra 2.75 inch width under my truck. Also came across a posi 12 bolt from a 89 fullsize blazer I'll see which one I can pick up cheaper

An '89 Blazer did not come with a 12 bolt, it would have come with a 8.5" 10 bolt. If it is a 10 bolt and a 'posi' it is likely a Gov Lock or as it is better known a Gov Bomb. Not something I would waste my time with.

Thanks for the tip. Maybe it was swapped in from the pics it's definitely a 12 bolt. May be a government bomb but it's not getting big hp so if it's cheap enough I don't mind

I think I read that earlier K5 Blazers are a good choice for 6 lug rear upgrades with only the 1.5 inch width increase. Are they truck 12 bolt style?

I'd like to find a 4.10 to go better with my Camaro WC T5 that has a high 5th gear.

The K5 Blazers are a built on a truck platform so yes they have the truck 12 bolt, up thru 1979. After that they cam with the 8.5" 10 bolt. The truck 12 bolts are all basically the same. So unless you find one that someone has upgraded, you aren't gaining much from your original 12 bolt.

i have an 87 3/4t rear axle 14 bolt here that I just measured at about 66 3/8"
