well I took my roof skin off and here are the results
Got around to taking the roof skin off. Not sure how many spot welds I drilled out. It was a pain though. Butchered the roof in some places. The rust isn't terrible underneath, probably 4 or 5 spots that need sheet metal fab and repair. going to wire wheel all the rust, por15 it, then put in some insulation.

He said in his post he's gonna wire wheel it....por 15 it and then insulate it.

Well I did a patch panel on part of the roof because of some pinholes. I recently noticed some more issues on the roof so I decided to just get in there and fix it all once and for all. Also getting ready to do a shortbed conversion but wanted to get the roof secton completed before that

I'm interested in how you took off the skin. I saw another thread where someone had removed the skin as well and then insulated/repaired a section then welded it back on. Really looks good but don't know if it's something I should worry about at this point. The roof on my truck looks pretty good but it's what I can't see that worries me.

Harbor freight has a spot weld remover that attaches to your regular drill. I wired wheeled the gutter then center punched each spot weld. I then used the HF tool and it worked perfect. A couple of places i drilled all the way thru on accident but other than that the job wasnt too bad

That doesn't look to bad. Mine was about the same plus a huge squirrels nest. I took mine off because when i was cleaning up the seam sealer in the drip rails I realized that half the spot welds did not hit both panels. The seam sealer was holding it togeter. I have been welding in patches across the eyebrow and corners since I took it off. I will post pictures. I also plan on spraying it with lizard skin before I put it back together.

I used a miller tig welder to repair 3 sections on the roof skin. Went pretty well. I havnt used a tig welder in 6 or 7 years so not too bad I guess.

I have both mig and tig at the house. I played with the mig a little to save gas and rods. Since it is in the inside and I really don't care what that part looks like, but for the outer edges I will have to tig out. I don't care what the rest of my old truck looks like, but inside the cab right in my face I don't want that all boogered up. I hope to make some progress this long weekend. The temps should not be bad.

Shaun23a11en...looks very cool and off to a good start...I've got a feeling I won't be able to pass on checking to see if I've got rust there too and maybe a rats nest or two...just looks a little tedious but I'm in no hurry. I pretty much decided to do the door skins to keep from having to buy replacements so it looks like I'll get some practice removing the tac welds..

Here is some of my work from this weekend. I cut out the center because it was to thin to clean up. I have part of an extra cab I have been cutting pieces for patches out of. I found a section with a really close contour and started tacking it in. It is tuff to weld to this old metal, but the side you can see looks pretty good before grinding. I took off this week so I have some small goal with sheet metal.

Nice work...it takes time but it looks like it will come out pretty good once you've been able to grind / sand etc...I can only imagine how much work it would have cost you down the road if you had not addressed this now...that's why I'm pretty sure I'm also going to remove the roof skin to get a good peak at the inside...if it is all good then now foul...if it isn't then at least I can get it repaired now instead of having to go back and redo after I've got everything else done.
