Stopped at Costco today and was offered a softtop?

A guy noticed me in my 72 K5 today and asked if I had a soft top.
I said no I have two hard tops.
He said I have one for sale never been installed with the frame if you want one.
I asked who made it and he said Chevy.
I thought the soft tops were all aftermarket?
Regardless if he gives me a deal how do I make sure its for my truck
not something else or a 73-75?
He sent me an image and said it is as new.
I would need to go see in person but wanted to fact check made by Chevy first?
He said he got it in a surplus purchase on a pallet with a bunch of stuff.

Thanks PG

Re: Stopped at Costco today and was offered a softtop?

I believe GM did offer the soft top as an aftermarket item back in the day. However, if this is indeed one of those, the vinyl could be in bad shape - it tends to loose its elasticity and shrink over time, which would make installation a nightmare. My money is that it is an NOS Bestop or Kayline top.

To verify that it is for a 69-72 Blazer, check the header that snaps to the top of the winshield frame. It will have a significantly different design between the 73-75 and 69-72 models. Unfortunately, I do not have a picture of my 69-72 soft top header handy to post for you to use in the comparison, but maybe someone else will post it up. If not,I willtake a pic of mine.

Other than that, make sure the vinyl is soft and pliable, windows are not yellowed, and that the overall length of the portion that attaches to the bedrail is somewhat close to the actual bedrail length (it will be a little shorter because you have to stretch the vinyl to install it, but you don't want it way shorter because that means it has shrunk).

Here's an original dealer installed 69-72. Soft top (MFD by "Whitco");
